Difference between Cali and Ontario, where we are very generous with road salt and deicing fluid. This is why we get our work trucks treated at Rust Check every year, so they don't look like this.

This I can totally see. I was in Southern CA on business once when it rained. I've never seen so many car accidents because it was raining. Here in New England people will still drive 65-70 mph in a snow storm.

Rain is good for business. After almost every rain we get an uptick in body shop orders.

I was in Dallas when they had snow. There were like 500 accidents within an hour, it was insane. Everybody drives around on completely bald tires there.

Poorly maintained fleet vehicles are hit the worst in salty areas. Back in 2013 in college I worked for a department on campus that had a work van, a 2003 Ford Windstar. It had 31,000 miles on it, and had to be scrapped due to the rust issues it had. It was never washed, and only made short trips around campus, the salty snow would just stay stuck to it as it rotted away in the covered parking garage.

Lots of them? Most of our work trucks (staff issue) are 8-9 years old. They get driven until it's not cost effective to keep them on the road anymore and then the person gets a new one. The 2011 RAM 1500 with the lifter failure I posted about in a previous thread is one of those vehicles, the operator is now driving a 2020 RAM 1500.

Friend of mine used to work for the city and his DD was a 20 year old Jimmy with half a million Km's on it, painted out in city colours. They had their vehicles Krown'd every year so the body was in surprisingly good shape.

LOL. Lived in Dallas for 6 years, can basically confirm. Speaking for myself, usually just 2 tires were bald. I spent so much on gas back then, I couldn't afford 4 new tires at the same time : )

Yes, but the million or so Dallas drivers who have never driven on snow before, plus the complete lack of plows/salt trucks, probably contribute more than the lack of 4WD.

Hope they got some money out of that Windstar. Ford had a recall for 98-03 models where they bought back a lot of the Windstars in rust-prone areas. The rear axle could snap due to corrosion and cause loss of control. There was another recall that had to do with corrosion but I forget what it was.

That was around 2010-ish. I was working for a company that had a 2003 Windstar with about 200k. This was in southern Illinois which isn't all that rust prone. When we received the recall letter, we took the van into the Ford dealer and they deemed it unrepairable and offered us $6500 for it. Easy decision. If the axle was that bad in a climate that really doesn't receive all that much snow/salt (right outside St. Louis), I hate to think how bad Windstars had it that faced real winters and road salt.

Was driving down 27th Ave today and an ADOT truck with a utility bed was an early 90s Ford.

Summer showers can make these oil soaked roads slick as ice, I keep good tires on my vehicles & still modify my driving accordingly. It rarely Snows here, But have had our fair share of Ice Storms in the past. Either one will completely cripple DFW.

We have several PennDot dump trucks in my county that are mid to late 90's still rolling around. Believe it or not they look in pretty good shape. Ironically they're salt and plow vehicles...

Did you see the pics of the 2011 I posted in my other thread? Truck was in great shape, particularly for the mileage. The guys don't abuse them and it seems as long as you keep the bodies sprayed, they hold up very well.
