A Hyundai TSB I found online seems to suggest that city driving and idling means you should follow the severe ATF change schedule of 30,000 versus 100,000 for normal driving. This contradicts what I have always thought about the issue. My thinking is that highway driving is more taxing on the transmission. Consider that to measure the ATF level, you were expected to do at least 20 minutes of highway driving to get the ATF temperature up to a normal level.
There is no urgency for me about this, as it is I already do a drain and refill at about 20,000 to 30,000 miles, but I am still curious about what severe service means for automatic transmissions.
