The round holes on the oil filter base.

I watched a video on Youtube about oil filters and the poster pointed out a particular oil filter having large holes as opposed to others having small ones (the multiple holes that surround the mounting stem on the base).

Does this make a difference in oil filter performance?

Post up the video link. The important thing is that the total area of the sum of the holes is large enough to not cause much of a pressure drop across the base plate.

If you measure the size of the small holes and add them up then measure the inside diameter of the pipe that the filter screws onto you will find that the pipe is the restriction and not the little holes.

But don't add up the diameters, add up the areas of the circles.

You can forget the pi, it is a constant you can remove for a comparison. Just add up the square the radii.

I'll make up a comparison:

One inner pipe with 12mm inner diameter = (6mm)^2 = 36 sq mm (x pi).
Six base plate holes with 5mm diameter = (2.5mm)^2 x 6 = 6.25 sq mm x 6 = 37.5 sq mm (x pi).

Pretty close in this fictitious filter base.

But won't the engineers tell us there is more to flow than adding up cross sectional areas?

For future reference ... .786 of a square of the same dimensions ..

That is, a circle that fits within a square is .786 of the square's area.

I really got tired of the 3 step.

It's actually 0.78539816340 .... or (Pi/4).

The guy cusses a bit (when talking about the ocod) so I can`t post the link, but if you get on Youtube and search "Fram filter" and it`ll come up. He says the larger holes in the Fram Xtra Guard allows for better flow and filtered oil.

Give use the username. That should narrow it down. The last geezer clown was an outright fraud. I challenged him and he blocked me from commenting.

I doubt that same geezer clown is an expert on flow through holes.

I gotta go find this video now to see what he says.

I think I might have found the video commenting on the holes. Go to YouTube and search for a video entitled "Worst oil filters vs. Best oil filters ( who makes the best oil filters? )" by guy called "1997FordProbeGT".

He isn't quite accurate in some of the things he says ... for instance he keeps calling all the nitrile ADBVs "silicone ADBVs". He says the FRAM XG is a well built filter, but he knocks his fist on it and makes a comment that he can hear something rattling around inside the filter ...

Yep,that`s it! I think his videos are really entertaining! Pretty funny guy who just seems like he`s having a good time.

Haha! That`s Awesome Gary! I wish I could`ve read your comments! The way he says "FRAHHHHM" totally cracks me up!!!!!!!

...yeah, Mr. Frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaammmmmm

Anyone remember the guy who sorta dresses like 1997FordProbeGT ..but was some eastern European or whatever and dropped the F-bomb every 3 seconds?
