The official verdict on K&N

I found what appears to be a good idea to make a home made cold air intake for my truck with a K&N cone air filter. I have heard a lot of conflicting info on whether the K&N really adds hp and mpg. I have also read that the K&Ns allow more dirt to pass into the engine than a paper element filter does.

I's like to hear it here from BITOG'ers what is the real deal with these K&N filters? Also is the cone any better or worse than the drop-in? Any info is appreciated.

The real deal is that they dont filter quite as well as a paper filter and they really dont flow noticeably better. The difference comes from replacing a restrictive filter box with a free flowing filter which is why some cars gain 3hp and others gain 30hp.

I would only switch from a paper filter to save money with a re-usable filter. And if I did that I would get a dry filter that doesn't require the purchase of filter oil. You should look into something like an AEM dryflow or an AED pro dry or even a fram synwash. Just my two pennies.

The fram synwash is an especially good compromise between a disposable paper and a re-usable media.
