The new NASCAR commercial is awesome!

The Wheel Of Fortune is having a NASCAR tournament theme this week Feb 9-13. On yesterday evening’s episode, he climbed into a race car on the set. Wasn’t easy for him despite being short and skinny.
 
Im excited to see this yearwhat Conor Zilisch will do and I believe he will turn some heads and make people wonder who is this kid.
 
I'm more of an F1 fan, partially because of the crazy levels of engineering details involved, but I try to watch the smashcar, ahem, nascar road races when I can.
I've been an F1 lover my entire life. I started watching in the late '60s and have been watching ever since. I agree that the engineering in F1 is unrivaled in motorsport, with the possible exception of the WEC. The problem with the incredible engineering in F1 it is it's no longer a driver's championship - it's a constructor's championship. Spec series like NASCAR and IndyCar produce true driver champions.

I don't know why I don't watch other more driver based racing series? I try to get into IndyCar, but I just don't stick with it for a season? I guess I only have time for one, and I know all the F1 drivers and teams, so its easier to follow for me. Also I guess I know which teams are actually racing each other, so its kind of like watching 3 or 4 races at once?
And F1 has Alonso, I like cheering for the old guys these days. It is satisfying watching him outperform his younger teammates every year.
 
Great commercial but TBD on the reality of it. I believe NASCAR has lost several fans recently with the format of their races, points system and next gen car with the single lugnut and sequential gearbox. I'm also concerned about the V8 engines as they try to recruit other manufacturers.

I'd love to see the old school transmissions with 5 lugnuts per wheel and more of an ABC body style. I guess more like the short track Super Latemodels.

The reality is F1 and NASCAR are probably the two healthiest series on the planet. The WEC (at the expense of F1) is making inroads and IMSA (at the expense of IndyCar) is gaining popularity, but when it comes to the number of fans who currently attend and watch televised racing, F1 and NASCAR are king.

I agree they are king, but that's partially because of the venues. There aren't many Eldora's or Knoxville's that can seat more than 20K for a dirt race. I would say there is plenty interest in dirt racing given the car counts at events like the Chilibowl, Knoxville Nationals, World 100 and The Dream.

Just this past weekend there were ~100 UMP modifieds racing at Volusia.

Grass roots racing at its finest. There is some real talent out there that never gets discovered. In my early 20s (mid 1970s) I worked for an industrial supply company. The owner owned a Super Modified. I used to help work on that thing and what a primitive beast it was! But watching those guys race on the quarter mile dirt track at the old San Jose Speedway was always an eye opening experience. Sadly I saw someone crash one Saturday night, getting trapped inside his vehicle, fully conscious and frantically waving his arms, only to burn to death while we watched in mind bending horror. Bob Zwemki. I'll never forget it. Those guys were friggin' warriors!

Commercial was great, but I never could get past the fact that most races have them turning one direction. I like F1 because of the engineering underlying it. I definitely miss the V8 engines though.

For sure the V8s sounded good, the latter era ones revving to 20,000 RPM!

But IMO the best sounding F1 cars were of the 12 cylinder era. Check out this video. It's all good but go to 1:50 in and listen that V12 wail as it races off into the distance. O...M...G!

I think that is every racecar driver's worse nightmare! A sad story for sure.

I have been a gearhead since my early teen years. I have been to some very fun races. There is certainly some great talent out there. Some of these young kids can sure wheel a car. My favorite race was so far has been the 2023 Gopher 50. Look it up on YouTube. What a race!

FWIW, I haven't been to a NASCAR race since Bristol in 2008/9.

The V12 architecture is my favorite because of the internal balance and the awesome noises, but I did not watch F1 during that era. I had the pleasure of listening to a Lamborghini V12 fired up and revving at a local Mercedes dealership over 20 years ago. It was an amazing sound for sure.
 
I never did catch the commercial. There is a neat show on right now that involves NASCAR origins. It must be the Moonshiners show. They are at a defunct, now private dirt track someplace in the hills of the Appalachian mountains. The Moonshiners were giving the history lessons about how Moonshiners are the true people who developed what eventually became a billions dollar industry thru their booze running skills. I knew Junior Johnson was one of those runners from way back. So, the neat part of the show. These guys were under the impression they were going out to the track to play around and drive and make some shine after. Then they got a nice surprise. The King Richard Petty and his grandson showed up to help them (teach them) a little bit about driving in exchange for some lessons on making some home brew. :love:
