The Lonely Quart...... a mix-up question.

I have a lonely quart of Brand X GF-4 5w20 oil... just one left that was forgotten about...

For quite some time I've been using brand Y oil now in a GF-5 formulation. also in 5w20.

Brand X and Y are different makes... For a normal general purpose 5K mile OCI, can I just dump the lonely brand X quart in with the brand Y I use now? or will weird evil things happen?

I had a weird discussion with my friend about it... he was a junkie for this board 5 years ago. I was not.

Both oils, X and Y are conventional... nothing exciting.. just common stuff.

Mix away. No issues should be caused by this based on what you described.

Not a big enough deal to cause any problems for 1 OCI at least. I was in your same dilemma. I mix oil all of the time but I did wonder about possible issues mixing GF-4/GF-5. I 50/50'd 4 qts and have had no problems in the last 3k or so. Their all back spec'd anyway so there should be no problem at all.

as long as they are both API certified it will be fine. part of the API certification is having the ability to be mixed with ANY other oil thats API certified.. which is most oils on the market today..

Not that it's going to be a problem in any case, but why not just keep the lonely quart for top-off's?

Mix, top up, or use as a lawnmower oil if you're really concerned. Before I joined BITOG, I never worried about mixing brands, and no engine of mine suffered ill effects. Now, I do it for top ups, or like my last OIC, 95% of it was PP, and the remaining 5% was Quaker State Ultimate Durability (both SOPUS anyway).
