I guess because one can hide behind a computer and talk all day about something, they might just be an expert. Then, I can welcome you back to real life...

I met up with a person from another car board for a few minutes today. This guy seemed pretty car savvy, as he was always giving some pretty good advice to people. Guy was doing some mods to his beater cavalier, and wanted to see mine. No problem, I thought...I washed her up, and took off, happy to talk to another car guy....

So we meet up. We look over my car, I explain stuff to him, and he is quite impressed. Did not talk much about his car, which I thought was strange. So, after a while I asked him about his. After bugging him for a few minutes, he finally opened his hood. Guess what? No "mods" to speak of. For a guy who took pride, even the tires were wearing quite uneven. Car looked nothing like his pictures. Worst sin that would set him on fire here: lying about changing his own oil. Noticed that oil change sticker in the window...which he had just gotten hours ago.

Now here is the interesting part. He was confused on why his car had "cutting out" issues while he was driving. He just couldn't figure it out. So I take a look, noticed the battery cables were loose, and tightened them. Car was back to normal. While I'm not perfect, I am sure as heck not going to make myself sound better than I really am. Call me old fashioned, I guess. What makes this even funnier was that my wife (who is not by any means a car person), installed her own car Visor by herself!

It's amazing what you can hide behind a computer screen....

That is funny! On a related note, I also don't understand why people list cars they used to own in their signature. As in: "SOLD: [insert car(s)]..."

Nah, you can post whatever you want.

It's just annoying when people tell you they do all these things with their cars, brag about it, only to find out that it was all a good cover up...

While my cars are not modded either, I can still give props to those that do...working on your car is good, and we all have to start somewhere....

I don't see anything wrong with posting your parent's car(s), nor past cars you've owned. It's interesting to see who owned what, and gives people a heads up on who to go to for maintenance questions.

If I maintained my parent's cars, I might consider posting their cars in my sig, if there was any relevance. I think I've seen some post on here experiences with their parent's cars, which I think is a good contribution. I can't think of any particular member who's intent was malicious, trying to claim ownership of something that didn't belong to him or her.

None of this is the same as what the OP is talking about: the know-it-alls who claim one thing, but, come to find out, their whole online persona is fake.

One? I think we still have a few of 'em. Nothing wrong with wrenching on family vehicles (I work on my parent's vehicles too) but when they are in your sig, people will assume they are yours.

I don't list all my vehicles in my sig. I think it's unnecessary and a bit pretentious in many cases. Just my opinion and nothing against those who like a big list!

Frankly I'm from a pretty skeptical place anyway, so I reserve the right to be a bit suspicious about almost everything!

I know it's pretentious, but I like wowing people with my impressive stable of cars.

/sarcasm off.

I don't mind a reasonable list. If someone says something about a car or brand and I see they own that model, it makes me think perhaps they know what they're talking about. I list mine so people can see what I own and work on.

But I agree it gets a little over the top when people have a bunch of things listed.
