But you can always pay for someone that HAS a pick up to do things like that and as far as the safety issue is concerned. There's always health insurance, right?

A vehicle that gets 46 mpg might feel good at the pump but it just might cost you far more than the savings in gas when it comes to what goes on in the real world.

Not all wrecks are that serious, plus, most of the smaller cars do fine in wrecks with the safety features that are present on the newer designs.

Of course I will not be able to haul a couch or haul 1000lbs of mulch in my Prius. But how often do I do that? Perhaps once a year? Considering how infrequently I need those tasks done, it is far more efficient and practical to rent a truck for the few times I need one.

Bingo!

It costs less to rent a truck or a trailer for a day than fill it's gas tank only ONCE!

As for safety, last time I checked, passenger cars were safer than pickup trucks.

Since they started downsizing cars 30 years ago to these new "egg mobiles" traffic fatalities and serious injuries have gone up. I don't see a Prius as a real death trap but there are a whole lot of these newer "cars" that i sure wouldn't want to get in a wreck in. You might be better off on a motorcycle than in one of these new "SMART" cars. At least you might get thrown off and suffer a few broken bones and maybe a concussion rather than be crushed to death and have ALL your bones broken.

As far as carrying capacity it all depends on your lifestyle and what you like to do. I can think of hundreds of times over the past 10 years where I wish I owned a pick-up or a van.

Do you live/rent/own your own house? I WISH I could get away with using my truck once a year.

Dude, cars have gotten bigger. compare 80's honda, toyota, and chevy cars to now. Good luck if you really think a donorcycle is safer. Just don't end up as roadkill.

While I agree with your math I would remind you that not all accidents are the same.
