The first customer I've ever fired

I've said it before in various subforums here - I am exceptionally lucky with my customers. The overwhelming and vast majority are good folks who I go out of my way to help. Then there's this frickin guy... A seventy something as far as I can tell.. about a year ago he brings me an Explorer Sport Trac that was making ugly timing chain noises... I always get to know my customers and this guy was a small engine mech and said that he built some dirt track engines, so I took my time with him, showed him what I was doing and went through my rationale. Yes, it has timing chain noises, but also a misfire. Lots of small talk and complaining about the cost of repair and how much money that he had in it already (should have seen it coming). Anyway, he says kick it out the door and he'll think on it. Eventually he authorizes me to fix the bad chain/guide/tens, but not both. So I wheel it back in and start working only to find oil in the coolant. Call him back up and he comes out to look. More talking and spitballing. Tried flushing the coolant, but the oil comes back. So he has me kick it outside again while he thinks on it. Ultimately he calls and elects to not repair and then tell me that he's only paying X amount of money. I was a bit taken aback and honestly didn't know what to say then.. So I make the bill up and charge him 1.5 hours plus some antifreeze (it was winter and cold). The bill came up to about $35 dollars more than he wanted to pay. When he showed up, he was displeased and gave all kinds of reasons and excuses and saying that he already knew it was a timing chain issue and that other shops already told him - some didn't even charge. Even after getting him to agree that the time I charged was reasonable and corresponded to what I charged, he was pissy. On the way out the door he made a back handed comment about my integrity. I had to eat the $30 odd dollars, but at least I wouldn't have to deal with it any more. Wrong. He calls up a few weeks later wanting me to replace the engine again. Told him no because of the way he acted, but he insisted saying that he liked the way I worked. Ultimately it never came to be, but he did continue to bring me his other vehicle for oil changes and usually eating up my time whining about this and that or telling me about his son who is a detective and martial artist in a town down the road. Even had the stones to short me again (very little money) I finally told him enough of that **** and to his credit, he did mail a check for a couple of dollars to make it right.

Anyway I dread dealing with the guy, so the next time he called, I told him that he needed to find another mechanic.. Well you'd have thought that I just insulted him mother and wife! He retaliated with all sorts of personal insults and mockery. I cut him off, wished him good luck and hung up. I thought ahh haa! I'm finally rid of him! Wrong. He proceeds to call me and text me harassing messages from his phone, his wife's phone and another phone... I blocked all of them without engaging in that BS. All was quiet for several months until yesterday afternoon (Sunday). I didn't hear anything but he left me a harassing text from a new number and after looking, he even tried calling me.. Like really old man??? Get a life! Another number blocked and reported as spam. He is one of many examples of why I pay no mind the "Always respect your elders" nonsense... After 13 years and MANY, MANY customers of varying backgrounds and levels of affluence, I can still honestly say that I can basically count on one hand the ones I don't want to see return and he is by far the worst customer I've ever had.

Yeah, I went through this with a bike I was restoring with someone. Guy fought me every step of the way and I finally had to do the "come get your piece of crap out of my yard". Story is much longer but will get into it later. First time I ever had to do that. It sucks when it gets to that point, but some people just don't listen and want to make excuses.

You should have told him "GET OFF MY LAWN!". At least this he would have understood.

I used to own an electronics' repair company. I had one customer who questioned my integrity while working on his big screen TV he'd brought to my shop. I told him it'd be best if he took it elsewhere. He didn't have a way to haul it at the time, so I told him I'd be there until midnight, so come at his earliest convenience that night. He showed up about 8pm and picked it up.

Edit... I blocked out the rest of the phone number that I missed when I first posted

Here's a screen shot of the latest text he sent me

I've considered calling his son and asking him if he knows what his dad has been up to 🤣
Just so you know, I'm 73 and would never treat you like that, and I feel confident the vast majority of old timers on BITOG would treat you with respect. This guy has been a turd his entire life.

Good for you... I slapped a bozo hard today as I put up with his nonsense and stupidity daily..

He has no skill and no clue on what he's doing and runs to forums where he gets really bad advice and asks me last..He's also new to the sport running around buying complete junk and continues and he can't grasp any technical info and is the i got to have it today kinda guy...

I threw him overboard today 😁

I had a retail business for 17 years and had to fire a couple of customers but nothing escalated like that. It shocks them when you say we can't do business anymore like it's their right to treat you like that and you have to take it. Don't worry about word of mouth, anyone he rants to easily see what's what.

Just so you know, I'm 73 and would never treat you like that,
Seriously?? I've been waiting for 70 so I can act curmudgeonly and say whatever I want and not feel guilty.

If that customer had all of that mechanical knowledge and did work for others, he should not have acted as he did, at ANY age.

The first red flag was when he mentioned "other shops". Which is why he found you.

The advantage of a private shop is that they can tell customers "where to get off" and "Leave and don't come back". Dealerships have to get to a higher level before they can be justified in that happening. By the same token, a dealership can not release a vehicle unless the bill is paid in full, unless some "arrangements" are made before hand.

Do not tell the son anything, unless HE shows up. If "threats" continue, contact the authorities.

It might be that the old guy is suffering from age-related depression. Still, no reason to act poorly, though.

That’s another way to have two crazies on you…. Call the police and say you’re afraid that he will cause you or your family or employees harm. Maybe a knock on the door from the POLICE will get him in line.
I agree. I was joking about calling his son, but you're right.. not knowing him or how his temperament goes, I could very well end up dealing with the police in my jurisdiction, as I'm sure that they would side with their fellow leo who is just blindly siding with his father.

You could well be right. I thought that possibly it could be a sign of some sort of mental deterioration, but maybe depression fits too? One of the times he was at my shop he was lamenting how well in life one of his classmates did and how much money he had. I could hear his voice break up a little when talking about about it.

I know that the vast majority of folks, young and less young are decent folk - you're right, I'm confident that most likely he's been like this to one degree or another for most of his life.

If he isn't suffering from depression he certainly is proliferating it 😁

I don't worry about him.. One of the few things that I've learned in life that ugly, cold or bitter people tend to precede themselves. And really for that matter so do people with really kind or happy personalities. It's just something that you know.

My advertising is strictly word of mouth and I don't have any issues getting and retaining customers. Well... most of them 🤣
