Many people think the desert is just a barren wasteland. It's not its full of life... Just different types of life.

The yucca and barrel cactus are turning colors , making flowers etc.

The flowers on ocotillo are really beautiful. Wife and I were hiking around Beale Springs on Sunday and came across a cholla with really pretty flowers. It was not a jumping cactus cholla. The desert is very full of life.

Wavinwayne, you rarely get the privilege of seeing a rattlesnake. However, on 7/26/24 we had the "privilege" of having a Mohave Green in our back yard. It died. It would be a Mojave Green in California.

We have a lot of timber rattlesnakes here in North Alabama. I have accidentally run over one that was stretched across a mountain bike trail. I was going too fast to avoid it. The pucker factor was high that day.

That’s one thing that was always creepy about my camp - very remote and and bumped up to wildlife refuge that is loaded with buzz tails … Gordon Lightfoot should have warned this one to stay on that vast acreage …

Nice looking "little" snake. Do you ever eat them? My wife will not cook one for me.

… Yeah, yeah … cook them yourself … I just don’t want friends or family to walk out the door and step on one - this was literally on my cocoa door mat …
Big and little testosterone nonsense means nothing to me …

Clean it, then give her the meat to cook.
Or 'go for the gold' and cook it yourself...should be easy compared to fileting the animal.
Give tanning the hide a go.

I've always wanted to try snake as they're muscular...and smoked eel is good.

Looks like a rattlesnake petting zoo. 😉
50+ years on this property and I have only seen 1 rattlesnake on the property. It was a baby and on my porch.

I scooped it up into a metal coffee can. Taped the lid on and took it into the hills you can see in the background and released it unharmed.

We do have many non venomous snakes though. Kind snakes, gopher snakes, racers etc

I have left landing nets on the ground and the baby snakes seem attracted to the fish smell - pretty easy to move them when young …

Beautiful area. I have seen a couple rattlesnakes in the wild. Where I am at I have a ton of Garter Snakes around my house. Helps keep the mice population down.

Cactus flowers really are special. Florists have been known to glue fake plastic flowers on cacti for sale.
