The BMW iX - what were they thinking?

The front end of my first car from Bavaria looked like this. The company now known as 'BMW' is a fiction;

I have to agree that is atrocious. Seems modern car makers are trying much too hard to outdo the others with the most obnoxious, angry, mean looking vehicles possible. Very little inspiration in most modern cars, with the exceptions of the muscle car retro fad.

I miss the soft friendly contours found on more pedestrian vehicles of the 90s.

Angry/mean can look good on a muscle car, but not much else. And even on sports cars it looks terrible, like the new Corvette is atrocious. Gone are the sexy curves, now we have wedge angles to the max...

I very much doubt any of the very forgettable (lack of) styling today will be embraced by collectors in years to come. All very forgettable, overpriced, disposable eyesores. Huge grills. Giant ugly lights. Extremely ugly sharp angles. Not at all attractive IMO.

Head designer Fritz says, “Franz, you design the rear hatch and wheel wells. Helmet, you take the front end. I’ll do the Grill!”

Looking at the iX and the i4, the i4 hood has a curve downwards that meets the kidneys. The iX looks like it doesn’t have curve. Sometimes the photos don’t really show things in the right perspective.

The holes in the seats are nuts. I don’t understand the reasoning behind them.

Not a fan of many of BMW's more recent trends, but at least the beaver teeth aren't as out of place on a big SUV, compared to the 3er/4er, where they're more disproportional to the rest of the car.

Big grilles have been the styling trend, and square centimeter for square centimeter, the iX's (faux) grilles probably aren't any larger than found on other comparable vehicles. Can't say that Lexus, Caddy, Audi, Genesis, etc. have any smaller nostrils, and none of them can claim to have anything other than generic shapes that are harder to ID. Nobody is talking about those, and even bad buzz is buzz they don't have, and that's something the people in Munich aren't shying away from.

It’s extremely ugly.

But I have one question. Who designed the front cup holders and how are you supposed to functionally use them?

Good question, but this is not the first time BMW has buggered up cup holders. The E39 ones "popped out" and were really too low and oddly placed to hold any larger cups and had a tendency to break. Luckily they were easy to replace, but it was a weird design choice.

Eeek ! Did they hire Honda's design team to ugly up their new models ? Those front intakes are large enough to swallow a deer should you hit one, and spit the carcass out the back. The upholstery looks like it was done in Tijuana and that steering wheel is hideous.

The dashboard makes a Tesla look attractive too. Well, the cranberry paint color isn't too bad. But I'd be embarrassed to be seen driving that thing.

Yup, it's all kinds of bad.
