The Best Safety Ideas That Will Never Work Because...

When I worked at Kraft Foods in maintenance anytime we were more than 4 foot off the ground we had to have a lanyard on for fall protection. This included stepladders. So if you fell, you also brought the ladder along to fall on top of you.
That's just like at construction sites where no one is allowed to carry anything up and down the ladders to the next floor. So every morning there's an hour delay where nothing gets done, while everyone hauls their lunch cooler up using a rope and pulley.

#0 - Don't grant licenses to people who have no business operating motor vehicles, for any number of reasons.

It's way too easy to obtain a driver's license in the U.S., and a majority of holders don't respect the task, don't know the rules, don't pay attention, or worse, do actually understand those principles in theory, yet ignore them in practice anyway.

I'm reminded of this every time I venture out on the road.

And was doubly reminded of this last time I was called for jury duty, for a trial where the defendant, with a prior DUI conviction, managed to kill a person, and maim another, while doing it again, under a suspended and/or revoked license.

The trial was projected to consume multiple weeks, so multiple pools of potential jurors were called for evaluation. Judging by the size of the courtroom, probably 300-400 people.

Hundreds of people, the dozen empaneled, and the judge could have had their time spent in much more productive ways because it should have never gotten that far, from the start.

At least the DA got it right this time, and was pursuing a murder charge.

Safety regulators have the classic "treat the symptoms, not the disease" approach in trying to save the stupid from themselves, yet failing to prevent them from hurting others.
This is your issue right here. I am all for due process, but " last time I was called for jury duty, for a trial where the defendant, with a prior DUI conviction, managed to kill a person, and maim another, while doing it again, under a suspended and/or revoked license."

Convicting this person should take about 20 minutes, and require whatever folks happen to be standing around the court that day to sit in the jury box for 5 minutes of it.

Actually I can name three.

1) A safety adapter for cell phones where the radio would normally be.

2) A cap on radio volume to a slightly higher than average setting, instead of ear bleeding loud volumes.

3) The car can't be started without all passengers wearing a seat belt.

I have seen way too many fatalities in my life, and the level of careless and distracted driving is killing way too many people.

Any other ideas?
I am adamantly AGAINST safety nannies and even more against the self righteous who wish to impose them on others when they're not a public or communal issue. No OWI? Duh.. No unrestricted speed limits on twisty 2 lane back roads? Makes sense.. Helmet laws? Nope. Prop 65 warnings on basically EVERYTHING, including a piece of bare/raw pine trim??? Seriously??

On the first, I and others definitely need clarification.

2nd - no! Just NO! High volumes are not a public safety concern. If I wish to listen to music at concert levels, then it's MY problem.

3rd - NO! I don't need a seat belt to move my car in the drive or from a lot to the bay where I'm going to be working on it. That's BS. I think it's ridiculous that seat belts are required by law in fact. This is not me advocating for not using them.. in fact, the opposite. They simply make sense. But to have the man with a gun pulling you over at any and all costs to write you a ticket is ludicrous. If you don't want to wear a seatbelt and you're injured or killed because of YOUR choice then it's YOUR problem. It's your responsibility to make good decisions that won't impact your family and loved ones.

We simply cannot continue to dumb ourselves down and take responsibility away from others - it's that responsibility in part that makes us learn and understand consequences. In the big scheme of things, we are simply another animal on this planet and natural selection absolutely should apply!

How about vehicles that report your driving infractions to rhe jurisdiction you commit them in and auto ticket you. Like running a red light in your 2040 Corvette SUV EV or going 32 MPH in a school zone during restricted hours.

Mandate "day care electrical code" for all residential buildings.
Basically it states all power outlets have to be 5 feet above the floor, making them completely out of reach of all little ones.
It seems to work flawlessly until some daycare worker plugs in a power strip and leaves it on the floor....

Yet murder is committed rather routinely worldwide even though has essentially always been "illegal".

Not seeing the causal link to what I posted and this streeeeetch of a statement regarding relevance. IMO, even the statement on its own is flawed. 8 Billion plus humans on this planet and what percentage of that 8 billion are murdered daily? Maybe we differ in the definition of "routinely." To me routinely would mean a much higher percentage than the data demonstrates. But that is also WHO data so might not be the most accurate.

My point is that enforcing even the most egregious crimes is extraordinarily difficult.

That is an OSHA regulation in the U.S.; however, it appears that that Kraft Food location misapplied it to stepladders. The attachment point for a fall protection lanyard device must be a fixed static anchor.

Let me make this even clearer to understand.

1) A safety adapter for cell phones where the radio would normally be.

The adapter would allow you to use voice commands instead of juggling that addictive instrument while concentrating on the road. Most new vehicles already offer Bluetooth. Why not just put that phone somewhere so that it can either be charged or at least be out of the way while you're driving?

2) A cap on radio volume to a slightly higher than average setting, instead of ear bleeding loud volumes.

Yes your music probably sucks. Really! And it probably smells funny too. So you wanna hear it? Fine! Roll up your windows tight and enjoy volume five so that the rest of us don't have to be subjected to another Paula Abdul music marathon.

3) The car can't be started without all passengers wearing a seat belt.

I have seen way too many fatalities in my life, and the level of careless and distracted driving is killing way too many people.

#3 is biblical. Moses would have made it a commandment and even Frank Zappa would have approved. If you hate #3 you're just a Godless anarchist who wishes the worst for your fellow man. And probably a Vanilla Ice fan too.

There are too many drivers who don't seem to understand that driving is a privilege, not a right, and that driving is a cooperative endeavor, not a competitive one.
There are way too many inconsiderate and downright reckless people out there today,
Their choice?
Great, until their choices result in a serious collision with serious injuries to you or yours.
Street driving is not track driving nor is it a video game.
Maybe time that we start enforcing that concept?

^This. I remember reading the service manual for our '75 Impala and there was a procedure for overriding this "feature" if it was causing problems starting the car.

I had a 1974. I permanently overrode it by unhooking the plug under the seat.

I'm all for that. Anyways in the US insurance companies seem to be doing most of the regulations freedom lovers don't want the government to do. Let the consumers weed out each other. If you want to drive irresponsibly let your insurance premium take care of that, and I want to be in a different risk pool from your teenager son.

Do you use GPS on your phone? Also phone size and spec keeps changing. How do you design a connector that will work 20 years into the future? A 20 year old phone does not look anything like today's phone.
