According to Consumer Reports Best Buy rating system the EverStart Maxx is the best and the Kirkland Signature came in second based on price and reliability. Seven DieHard models were excluded from the test because Sears changed manufactures.

That is only because they failed to test the best agm batteries and others by east penn and trojan. I have had costco batteries fail twice after only 2+ years because of a weak alternator and a bad cell so how good are they? I still buy them because of the warranty and price. I will only buy batteries by Johnson controls anyway.... so I guess they are right........

A battery is only as good as its owner.

I'll pay the extra $30 or so for an Optima. I like the slow self-discharge rate (especially for the classic car which sometimes sits for up to 2 months) and the lack of any corrosive gasses- no more fuzz on the battery terminals or hold-down brackets.

FWIW, their prices seem to have dropped back down a bit. When I bought my first Optima (red top starting battery) back in the 90s, they were kinda silly expensive at $110 when at the time a good 750 CCA conventional battery at the time was $60-70. Then they just went stupid at $200+, but at the same time a good conventional battery went close to $100. The last conventional battery I bought was $120 out the door, and the most recent Optima Red Top was $160. That's not such a bad split given the advantages.

Yep.

The ones made by Johnson Controls are tip-top in my book.

Yep my Interstate is still kick'en it hard after many many years now.

Wow.

If you were to check the battery core bin at any autoparts store a few years ago, the overwhelming majority of batteries that failed at or around 2 years would be EverStart

We started marking them with a grease pencil, NEverStart.

Of course that was the regular NEverStarts. Not the D/T Maxx.

Go figure, the best battery is the one that is the easiest to get. You are never too far from a walmart to exchange the thing for credit either.

I'm running a 29 dollar walmart battery in my ladies pontiac. Good preventative maintenance every 4 years no matter what. I'd rather change a battery in the fall on my own time, then in the dead of winter during a blizzard.

There is a flaw in the Consumer Reports about warranty of EverStart Maxx, it currently has only 3 years replacement no more 108 months pro-rate. I agree with Justin, buying/returning battery from Walmart is easy because they are everywhere, also all EverStart Maxx is at 1 price of $77 in So Cal. One of the biggest battery is group 49 at the same price as the smallest group size 51.

IIRC the best battery of one BCI group is DieHard Platinum, but it wasn't select as best buy because the price is too high at almost $200, while EverStart Maxx and Kirkland Signature are about mid $70's.

I like the Acura OEM battery in my car. I'm not sure who it's made by, but I'd guess Panasonic. It's a little over 5 years old now and still works fine. Whoever made the OEM AC Delco in my mom's Malibu was pretty good too, lasted 7 years before it finally died.

I was just going to point that out. ESM and Kirkland are the cheapest ones they tested. Others that were recommended between $80-$90 were a regular DieHard, Napa Legend Premium,Duralast Gold and regular Duralast and the Bosch Premium Power.

I would also like to add...the EverStart Maxx has a 36 month replacement warranty which gives it high marks considering it's one of the cheapest batteries that were tested.

About a couple of years ago I purchased an Interstate (Johnson Controls) battery for my '94 Camry. This particular battery was a "blem" (in other words it had only a cosmetic defect which made the battery much cheaper, but only had a 90 day warranty) group 24 battery which was specifically made for brand new Honda/Acura vehicles. So I'm guessing that should be the answer.

It seems OEM batteries tend to last longer than replacements. I wonder what the difference is? When I had my Sierra the OEM ACDelco battery lasted nearly 8 years and the battery in my wifes Grand Prix is currently 6 years old and still starts like it when if was new.

A couple of years ago, I purchased a battery from the Interstate regional dealer here for a '94 Camry I had. This was a Group 24 battery that Interstate specifically made for new Acura/Honda vehicles (according to the counterperson). This particular battery was a "blem" (having only a cosmetic defect(s), but no functional issues) so I got it for much less money but with only a 90-day warranty. But anyway, I think this should answer your question.

By contrast, the OEM battery in my 98 Regal GS failed in under two years. And it's not as if down here our batteries get frozen on a regular basis. I suppose our summers provide their own challenges, but still -- less than two years from an OEM????
