The average car loan today is $48,000

If you can't afford it don't buy it. That simple rule can keep a lot of people out of trouble. ;)
1,000,000% agree. If you can't save the $600 per month, or whatever payment, why in H-E-Double Toothpicks are you even thinking about such a purchase?

@The Critic just got me a perfect '05 Corolla that offers low insurance, registration and sips expensive CA gas; this car will be in service for years and ask for very little.

My first new car was a 1972 Toyota Corolla 1.6 4 speed which was an upgrade from the 1.2 base model. At $2,500 it was $300 cheaper than the new VW sun bug we were considering. We traded in a 1964 Ford 289 2V Galaxie 500 and had it Financed for 3 years with $80 a month payments. My last new vehicle was a 1995 Nissan 4wd pickup that I drove for 19 years. I retired at 62 and have been debt free for almost a decade. No loan officer, investment banker, financial adviser or keyboard cowboy will ever convince me I haven’t saved money by buying good pre owned vehicles for the last 30 years!

I see lots of younger folks in their mid 20’s driving Teslas.

I wonder how many of them are financially stretched to have their Tesla….. payment & insurance.
I think there's a high probability many of them are driving "Mommy's and Daddy's car." At least that what it appears to be here, and they drive them recklessly to boot.

A lot of people live where rust is a real problem and that 05 Corolla would be at the very end of its life in those states unless it was properly rust proofed.

But there are a lot of options that do not cost $600/ month either.

The Tesla used car market lets' you get into one using other people's money due to the rapid depreciation.
Fot the right use case, you can do very well. Whoever got our Model 3 Mid Range, they got a wonderful car.

I’m so jaded over people’s profligate spending, that I really could care less. Unless they start complaining about inflation, grocery prices, etc, and they’re driving a 60k car. Miss me with that.

A bunch of old guys bickering about costs today based on 40 years ago, and who has the best worst vacations (seriously comparing cruises?). You guys must be fun at parties.

Well...this topic has been discussed over and over again. The economy in regards to buying new/used vehicles on here has really hit hard with lack of variety of new and varied threads. And the views on this topic are as irreverent in this thread as they have been before. It's like asking the guys on here to name the current top 40 songs on Billboards chart. Whose going to know any of the artists/groups?
The "badge of honor" on this forum is buying a Crown Vic with 100,000 miles on it-driven by law enforcement and then driving it another 200,000plus miles.
I mean really.....

For lots of people, the crown vic is the smart play financially. Or its some cheap entertainment that saves them money too?
I don't know why rich guys like to come on the net and khrap on people? I guess its makes them feel better about themselves?

During 35+ years of buying new cars have purchased the base model 95% of the time , even if it meant no A.C. or cruise control . Don't use A.C. or cruise control that much . As for cosmetics , can go without alloys . The less 💲the better . Try to get payment under $300 and a low rate ( <1% through auto company ) for 3 > 4 years and pay more towards the principal to get loan paid off around 2 years earlier .
