I have a 2000 Taurus with 176K miles. The only things that went bad were: one O2 sensor, the A/C clutch (twice), and two vacuum hoses.

All other things are pure maintenance items. Yes, Ford Quality.

I am thinking the same thing. I can see just doing things if it was say $150 or even $200 but $900+. I wouldn't proceed unless the owner ok'd it all 1st.

Of course I did. The repairs were done over the course of several weeks.

I am not sure how to state this without being rude, but I am not sure if I am in agreement with you that most college students are as broke as you portray them to be. Maybe it is just the area and the people I surround myself with, but most college students around me have enough money to live comfortably. Whether that money is from their own job, financial aid, parents, etc., I don't know.

So every time I am asked to take care of some routine maintenance, it is not uncommon for me to find additional repairs and maintenance needed-- which is how this situation developed.

One of my friends has a 2006 Prius with 85,000 miles. In the past, I have done some work to the car, which included arranging for new tires, alignment and a few oil changes. This time, he called me and told me it needed an oil change, but to also take care of anything else that was needed because we are about to graduate and he trusted my opinion over the dealer's.

So, I looked over his car. When I was all done, this is what I ended up doing:

  • Engine Oil and Filter Change
  • Drain and Refill Transaxle Fluid
  • Clean and Adjust Rear Drum Brakes
  • Replace Engine Air Filter
  • Replace Cabin Air Filter
  • Replace Engine Drive Belt
  • Replace Rear Wiper Insert
  • Replace Front Wiper Blade Assemblies
  • Front End Alignment
  • Replace 12v Auxiliary Battery
  • Replace Multi-Function Display (controls radio, HVAC and navigation functions)
  • Replace Left Axle Seal
  • Replace Engine Water Pump
  • Drain and Refill Engine Coolant
  • Replace Spark Plugs and PCV Valve

Altogether, the work totaled up to $977.55!

The cost would have been much higher if I had not sourced the Multi-Function Display from LKQ ($465 vs $1500 from dealer) or if I had not caught the water pump and axle seal in time for them to be covered under the certified pre-owned warranty. The water pump and axle seal repairs were $50 each, which was the cost of the deductible.

I think the moral of the story is that if someone asks you to look over their car for potential issues, you can always find something wrong with it if you look hard enough. This was probably my friend's biggest mistake, since he just handed me the keys and told me to fix everything that I felt needed fixing.

However, it goes to show that many people are simply unaware of how many maintenance items exist (as most of the items on the list were maintenance) and that there is a lot more to car maintenance than just oil changes!

So in the end, my friend spent much more than the $40 he planned, but at least everything is now up-to-date.

At a dealership, that would be considered "trying to rip you off" according to some people.

And that was the point I was trying to illustrate.

Many UCI(University California at Irvine) students drive late model years (2007-2008 or later) BMW, MB, Infiniti, Lexus ... I even saw some of them drive Porsche 911, Boxster ... As Critic said, I don't know where/how they have money to spend on expensive cars and maintenance.

Why? Those don't need to be touched.

Heck, let's get really crazy. I would of stripped that car to bare metal, primed and blocked 3 times, adjusted all door gaps, added metal to get the withing .003 mm, pulled and checked all valve spring pressure, re gapped the piston rings....etc.

I know a lot of it went towards the display, but $977 is a LOT of money to have to put into a 2006 model year car. I would be pretty unhappy if I was the owner of the car - not at you, but at Toyota. Especially considering that if he didn't have the extended warranty and a friend to help him out, it would have cost more than twice as much to get all those repairs and maintenance done.

I have a 12 year old Buick out side that has not even come close to needed that much in repairs.
Not to mention the other 3 GM cars sitting out there, that combined haven't need that much work.
That cars must have the [censored] beat out of it.

If you don't mind me asking but where do you go to school? Around my campus must of us certainly don't live "comfortably" and those that do generally have their hands in mommy and daddy's pockets. Or they got some kind of scholarship and continued to take out all the financial aid they could and pocketed all the money.

After posting this I realized that I could look pretty hypocritical if I didn't explain how I got the Charger. I am about 95% independent from my mom, she pays for the occasional unexpected expense if I am unable to get the money for it. Part of my reasoning for this was that after 18 years of her being a single mother the least I could do was be financially free from her so that she could concentrate 100% on herself. As most of you can expect, her being a mom, this wasn't acceptable. She insisted in paying for some college but I refused and continue to refuse today. Because of my refusal we came up with a deal, she would buy me a new truck after I graduated instead. This would get her 4 years to save up and pay for the truck without needing to burden herself in a $30K loan. She however decide to surprise me and bought me an '04 Ram 1500 for $9K, it was a price she just couldn't pass on. I fixed it up and put a lot of money into the Ram hoping to ship it stateside, when I figured out the price to ship I sold it for a tad under $14k and picked up the Charger. The Charger is taking place for the truck upon graduation.

Not sure if that is TMI but I figured I'd explain lol.

I'm finishing college and wouldn't drive a prius with a gun to my head. Ugly, slow, and a marketing ploy to make people feel like they are "helping" the environment. Toyota has destroyed Sudbury Ontario with the nickel mine that they have there.

Most of that was maintenance work though. Alignment, 12v battery, plugs, filters, fluid changes-- those are all routine items.

However, the water pump, axle seal and display screen were not. If all of those were done at the dealer out of warranty, the total cost would have been $520 (water pump), $400 for axle seal and $1600 for the screen.

So my friend's bill would have been about $3,000.

UCSC. And yes, there are definitely some who do what you described. For the most part, it's a YMMV too. Like I said in a few posts up, it may just be the crowd I hang out with.

A four-year-old car needed a sway bar? That is some fine quality there indeed.

You mean the same nickel mine that has been mining there since the 1800s? The one that sells only 0.5% of the nickel produced to Toyota, and the rest is sold to other industries that have NOTHING to do with hybrid cars? Oh yeah, that's entirely Toyota's fault.

Drive whatever car you like, but your post is baloney. Ugly? That's up to you and your taste. Slow? Another subjective call -- if the owner finds its accel curve acceptable, well, what's the problem? Exactly how many miles have YOU logged in a Prius???

And the big one, reflecting YOUR brainwashing. Most of us who drive hybrids don't do so because we're "helping the environment", we do so because they actually burn very little fuel, which saves us cash (incidentally, I bought both of our hybrids "slightly used" meaning I didn't pay any heavy premium for them...). I now do mostly urban driving, typically 250-300 miles worth, every week, and in the Camry, I'm averaging about 35 mpg. Not bad for such a heavy and roomy car, especially compared to the performance of the conventional versions.

As for Sudbury, oh please. In the late 70s - early 80s, I drove through there at least a half-dozen times, and it was as much of a mess then as it is today. The state of this area has zero to do with hybrid batteries, and everything to do with the willingness of the locals to permit their town to be enviro-raped in order to line the pockets of of the mine/land owners.

Mike:

What happened to the MFD (multi-function display) in this car? Our Prius, which I bought with about 15 miles on the odo, came with a large, mildly distracting scratch on the surface of the MFD, which we just live with. Ours is, of course, an 04, which has the analog version; I suspect you replaced the digital version, the subject car being an 06, right? How much of the near-grand went to the new MFD?

No one does starter or alt. bearings and brushes any more. Maybe some third world country's but here in the States that went away in the 1970s and such. If idler and tensioner was OK its left alone. Unneeded expense. What you described is kinda getting carried away.

The touch function of the MFD was not functional. If you touched a section of the screen, another portion of the screen would be activated.

The dealer wanted around $1400 for a remanuctured version. I bought one from LKQ, off ebay, for $465.
