Texaco's Syn Gear Lubes - Any Good?

I have a 2001 Burb with a G80 locker and got the same response from Eaton that gave Bill Plock. They confirmed that their G80's come from the factory with Texaco Syn 75-90 oil# 2276. However, when I went to the Havoline/Texaco website, could not find that product #. I did however find a product called Texaco Synstar GL 75-90. I attempted to post the link below.

The big question is, is this the same stuff or a different formulation?

What do people think of this gear oil. I have 5 gallons that was given to me from a Texaco oil Distrib.

My manual and Eaton both promote synthetic gear oil over mineral base. But, I think that the Schaeffer 267 would work well too.

Code 2276 is indeed a factory fill product (Chrysler). Most likely, the only way you'll get any of the 2276 material is at someplace selling, for instance, MOPAR parts. That is the usual case for factory fill products that need service fill counterparts. As for the Texaco Synstar, it would work fine in this application. It is a Group IV synthetic + esters and has more qualifications (i.e., Eaton/Dana extended drain) compared to 2276.

Thanks for the opinion.

If I went to the dealer, I would pay around $25/qt for the factory fill. I have used the Schaeffer 267 before, but since this Texaco product is free, I thought about using this if it was any good. Sounds like it is pretty good. So, I will give it a try in my '93 Explorer and the next time I change my Burb, I will use it there.

Is there a shelf life on gear oil?

If it is kept capped

the shelf life would be 5 to seven years.
