Testing your CCS

Tomorrow morning is supposed to be -30C here, which happens to coincide with the CCS testing point for 5W-xx. I still have Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 in the Expedition at the moment with several thousand Km's on it. Given that we know that cold temp performance degrades with use, I wonder how far above the limit the lube in the sump might be?

I'm not concerned about it starting. It started last year in the same temp with a much weaker battery than what is in it now. I am however interested in just how poorly the oil flows at that temperature with some miles on it.

Weather network shows only -18 overnight tonight and in the morning. How can there be that much of a temp difference from here to there?
I guess that vehicle doesn't have an oil pressure gauge?

It's a newer Ford, it has a "yep it has oil pressure" gauge, LOL!

That said, the Weather Network isn't saying the same thing anyway, it shows a low of -22, which contradicts the guy on the radio

Guess we'll know in the morning. We've had two days where it has been -25C, so -30C didn't seem all that incredible to me

Yep, I don't really pay attention to what they say, I go by what I see in the morning!
Those "yep it has oil pressure" gauges are useless. 95% of the drivers out there never look at gauges anyways lol I prefer real gauges, Autometer gauges fit the bill nicely

Nothing like a crisp -30*c morning to make you feel alive, I say...

However, at the moment, we have morning lows of about -5*c ... unseasonally warm, but, not complaining.

Next time you change your oil you should save a sample and do a pour test when it gets that cold out.

That is pretty cold, but still only about -22F.
I've started cars on mornings at least that cold with engines running 10W-40 of whatever current API spec applied from the early eighties through the mid nineties.
As we all know from the numberless thick vs thin threads, the oil will pump just fine and it will warm up and thin pretty quickly.

It is colder than any freezer and about 80F colder than the lowest temp we had 3-4 weeks ago at around mid 40's F.

There is no way I can live with that low temperature !

Are you going to start it? A video might be entertaining, especially if you have some trouble.

It might be time (prior to next winter).... to change over to a 0w20 or 0w30 oil, like Mobil 1 or Mobil Super Synthetic.

In fact, you can use them YEAR ROUND.

Start the Charger then drop it in reverse immediately. See if that fluid change fixed it.

Sorry, but I live in Northern Canada, and NOBODY would ever say " it's only about -22*f..."

Cold is cold... and anything below about -18*c (0*f) is cold... beyond that you get into really cold, then stupid cold...!

It has always seemed to me that once you get around 0F, any colder just feels about the same. Of course Im usually either skiing or just transferring from one warm place to another...

I normally run AFE 0w30 (and have AFE 0w-20 in the Charger). But I got a lot of Pennzoil Ultra 5w30 on sale so I was trying to use it up.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll be started. Also am quite sure there won't be any trouble. Maybe if it was -40 things might be more interesting on that front
