Test drove a Chevy Volt today

I really enjoy the technical advances. So, when a product like the Volt comes along, I must try!

I did the "loop", down the road, then back roads, then interstate, then back to dealership. My speeds on the back roads were around 45MPH. I accelerated on the highway to nearly 80, then backed off to traffic speed.

Total drive, about 10 miles. The Volt had 9 miles battery range available, and the engine did not come on (that I could tell). It still had 5 miles range upon return. Interestingly enough, the car accelerated to about 60 or 65, then accelerated harder. Kind of odd, as I expected decreasing acceleration as my speed increased.

The car was very quiet, and actually makes my Jaguar sound rough and noisy. The ride was acceptable and the steering was fair at best (kind of numb). The seat was not comfortable for me, as it tilts forward when it goes up. Very much like an Altima and some German cars. I don't like that one bit. Real power seats would be a "must" for me. As I don't like sitting on the floor or up high but tilted forward.

The car accelerated fairly well and certainly was pleasant to drive. Regenerative braking was quite good, with very good feel and none of that "prius" wonky-ness. The harder you stepped, the more braking action you get. Just like a real car.

Overall, it is not a high end car, but it's not an economy car either. The interior is cramped in back, but plenty of leg room is available in front. I liked it and would enjoy ownership.

I test drove one in a special technology review when they first came out. It was alongside the equinox fuel cell vehicle. I liked it, though there were a few funky things like you noted. Though technical challenges abound, IMO plug in vehicles like that are the future.

That is exactly how the seat in both of my Toyota cars was. You can raise the seat, but it tilts you forward as you raise it. Absolutely uncomfortable to me. I don't know why they design seats this way. I have generally ruled out manual seats for the future, and not only for that reason. I often get very particular about seat bottom and seat back angles, and will sometimes change things up just a touch every now and again or on a long drive. Manual seats don't allow for a small enough adjustment for me...you can only adjust in the increments allowed by the manual adjustment.
 
The sticker price was 46K, but there is a $7,500 tax rebate, bringing the cost to $38,500. Of course, you must pay sales tax on the full amount of $46K! It's no bargain of a car, that's for sure.

The range is supposed to be, in real world conditions, about 30 miles on the battery. Chevy was claiming 25 to 50 miles. But, from what I read, 50 miles can only be achieved by driving like an idiot and holding up traffic.

It was 94 degrees yesterday when I pulled into the dealership. The Volt's AC worked quite well.

I liked the car very much, for what it is, price aside. However, I must say that it's not good enough for my money. If this is the future, I can't afford it. $40,000 buys you a really sweet conventional car!

If, for example, this car was $25,000, it would be worth it. Basically, it's interior is smaller in some ways than a modern Corolla, it's no more comfortable, and it does not perform better.
 
It's based on the Cruze architecture, and the Cruze just isn't in the same league of space as a Camry or Accord these days. Both of those cars are rolling living rooms now.

A Volt wouldn't work for my rural commute, but when I'm closer to my job it would work nicely.
 
I dunno sciphi, I wouldn't want a rolling living room. I want a car that is roomy, smooth riding, but still has the ability to go around corners with less body roll than a a boat with the rudder to the stops.

Incorrect. The Volt with a charged battery will operate at highway speeds with absolutely no assistance from the ICE. The ICE does not kick in on the Volt until the battery is below a certain percentage, regardless of road speed.

I thought GM changed it so that at 70+ the ICE would kick on to work in sort of reverse of the IMA on Hondas.

In Winter or Summer? It makes a huge difference...

This guys average was in the dead of winter with heavy heater use and typical mixed use driving speeds.

The averages below were achieved by the press corps in the summer here in Michigan. Test mileage was accumulated over surface streets in traffic with average speeds between 45-50 mph...quite an improvement.

Yes, but only under very a specific set of parameters. Key among them being that the battery is below a certain percentage charge. If you are at or near full charge the Volt will operate at highway speeds with the ICE completely off and offering no assistance. Once the battery charge drops below a certain level the ICE can and does kick in.

At least thats what I've noted on the two I've driven.

The OP noted that the battery had 9 miles of range when started, it should have been low enough to allow the gas engine to fire and improve the overall efficiency.

Ahhhh...ok...if the battery were depleted to only 9 miles range. You are correct the ICE would kick in under certain variables.

I missed that 9 mile remaining range distinction...sorry about that.
 
Dan Edmunds from Edmunds Inside Line has the highest electric range I've heard of: 54.6 miles in their purchased Volt. Inside Line is averaging just over 38 miles in electric range since they purchased the car. That's in sunny So Cal though, not the cold Midwest.
 
is this heap still 40k bucks in this depression? nice try GM, I'll be interested when the price drops which it won't.

So are you stating that the Cruze is a better car, or the Camry? Is a "rolling living room" a good thing, or a bad thing IYO?
