Tesla Passive Supercharger Opportunity

BYD already has 1000kw charging stations on the ground. Inside EV's tested a BYD Han L and added 250 miles/ 400km in five minutes. Not sure what a 5% to full looks like. Wasn't Tesla supposed to have 1000kw charging by now?

The Zeekr is even faster, but it does not seem to give it faster trip times.

We heard similar stuff about the sea lion and it doesn't compete with 400 volt cars on a trip.
Look how much less efficient it is despite its architecture.

Looking froward to seeing the Hans road-trip times tests in heat, battery degradation and all the important stuff.

Was Tesla supposed to be 1KV? I think the V4 charger and the cyber thing have the ability, but i didnt hear about the mainline cars getting 1KV.

I dunno who is doing what. What I do know is, living with an EV is pretty easy around here, depending on your use case of course.
What you learn during ownership, is to make use of your downtime. Supercharger location and availability is key, moreso than charging speed.

Another issue is the battery degredation due to high power charging, but I will leave that up to the experts. The early Teslas and certainly other makes, had battery life problems, but they have improved.

All that fast charging would have to happen in the bottom of the battery. Don't get me wrong, that's a massive improvement, but we're talking about saving 10 minutes max once the heat builds. Then again I'm not a huge road tripper and I haven't felt enough inconvenience to worry about how much time I'm losing as is. I've not had to wait for my car to finish charging before leaving anywhere when I have used public charging, but I've always stacked the reasons for my stops even when I drove ICE. The least amount of stops the better as far as I'm concerned.

Does is hot gate, cold gate, speed gate?
How well can it control cabin internal temps when DC fast charging?
How well does it work on a variety of voltages?
How efficient is the home charging step up from 240V 50-60 amp to 800-1KV DC?
How big is the battery to begin with - huge batteries always swallow more upfront.
How efficient is the car overall on measured trips at disciplined set speeds? (Bjorns 1K is well done)
What is long term degradation and how is it being measured.
How does the battery warranty work. How many spares are on a rack a the dealer/ service center?

You're not wrong, many variables at play. It would take some real world data to see how it stacks up.

I wasnt telling you anything here, I know you know all that - but sometimes there are guys in the thread that don't know.

Meanwhile I'm glad to see competitive offerings from everyone and love that I have choices.
 
My son used a Mercedes Supercharger at Buc-ees in SC before arriving at our house in NC.
I calculated at the time (loose numbers) the cost to drive to our home was about the same or more than if he used gasoline.
I may have posted the receipt in here some time ago. (months back)

Typically for everyday stuff driving to and from work he charges at home which is a savings of course.
 
We just spent around $300 on Superchargers on a very long drive (about 4,000 km). I was happy to pay it.

BC rates are much better than in Alberta and Saskatchewan, but I suppose the rates reflect the cost of electricity and the usage rates in the 3 provinces.
Gas is cheap here in the land of the free but I see you paid just cover 8 cents a mile for electricity. Almost equal to a fuel efficient car. Pretty much lines up with my son's experience above in post #28

For sure those that charge at home is a big savings.
 
Over the road. The savings is at home. You'll only do this on longer trips.
Agree 100% but I do wonder when I read about charging "farms" at apartment buildings and businesses as a for profit model. For apartment and condo owners this might be a problem.
BTW he has another BMW EV on order, will arrive in Feb, this one will be the more longer range version not the m50(or m40) whatever he has now. Also just had a 240 installed in his new house.

I'm not sure an EV is the right answer for anyone that doesn't have full control of their electricity access at home. I would have never bought it without the ability to install my own charger. If I was in an apartment with no charging access I would have bought the VW Golf R instead, though across the board that car was more expensive than my Model Y Performance.

My numbers are a wag and in Canadian dollars to boot. When I get time I'll do a better estimate.

Fuel is expensive in BC where Supercharger rates are the lowest. But the real savings occur when you can charge at home. It's a good thing to be able to take a Tesla on a long trip, even if the energy costs are quite a bit higher.

If you mostly drive on long trips, the energy cost savings from driving an EV compared to a fuel efficient vehicle may be pretty marginal. There is less maintenance on an EV for the first couple of hundred miles but it seems unlikely that anyone is going to go 300,000 miles or more with an EV without replacing the main battery. If you're going to do that, the math might change again.

If someone is looking for a project, it would be interesting to compare the total cost of driving a Toyota Camry Hybrid vs a Tesla Model 3 for 100,000, 300,000 and 500,000 miles.

Around here, with our gas prices, the only way the Camry comes out ahead is with insurance costs. Of course service costs, electricity costs, etc come into play.

If I had a base Model 3 (or Y) vs. a Camry, the Camry would be more expensive to drive. And far more inconvenient...

Meh, Tesla Insurance is cheaper than most others. Equinox EV through aaa is $270/mo, my Tesla through Tesla Insurance is 185/mo. And those vehicles have similar value.

Mine just jumped. Dunno why. I have Costco Connect. Perfect record. Lotsa cars. The M3P was actually cheaper when I switched from the '18 Mid Range RWD to the new Performance version.

Sheesh, what's a poor boy to do?

Depending on the depreciation. Tesla bought at a high price would be way worse in depreciation depending on the pricing of bought and sold. Camry is at least predictable and stable, even if a hybrid may also have a battery depreciation problem over time. I'd say Camry is likely still cheaper.
