Tesla Milestone: 5 Millionth Car Manufactured

But you left out Tesla
1.3 million

I missed out on the RNM numbers because I accidentally closed the tab in the browser and when I went back it said I had to sign up to gain access. That’s a surprise. Anyway, RNM was over 5 million so it puts a perspective on the numbers.

Im confused but that's ok, it happens *LOL*

I cant fault the unions to try what they are doing. Inflation is raging, and so are profits. Its only a matter of time until Tesla unionizes and has their turn.

Anecdotally my wife just accepted a new job after countering their initial offer. If she didn't: 11% would have been left on the table. Daddy's got oil changes to do with the ICE fleet, thank you to the wife.

You are 100% correct that Tesla will be unionized within 5 years. Tesla blue collar workers know Elon has veeeery deeeeep pockets and will demand better pay, retirement and benefits.

Good to see your wife get a nice raise. (y) 💰

I negotiated and got a 22% raise earlier this year when my employer spun off from the ‘Mother Ship’ and I took on a new role within the organization. Before the spin off lots of people were offered a very nice early retirement package and left, good for them.

It was just announced yesterday that Tesla has produced its five millionth car. They produced their fourth millionth car just this past March. That's one million cars produced in just the last 6 months. Pretty impressive for a manufacturer that only makes EV's and the bulk of those produced comprise of only three models and really only the Model 3 and Model Y in the largest numbers.

It's difficult to find exact numbers for other US EV manufacturers but it looks like Ford has built around 200,000 and GM has built around ?
They have been selling ~ 20,000 per quarter this year.

Ford says they plan to build 2 million EV's a year by 2026 and GM is looking to have similar numbers. Stellantis seems to still be in the also ran category.

Now GM and Ford are dealing with a UAW strike that has outrageous demands for hourly pay and pension benefits. I have often stated that the biggest challenge for the legacy automakers is going to be coming up with the enormous amounts of capital necessary to expand and modernize their plants to build EV's and that is provided they have already spent the money to come up with innovative new designs and production methods.

Competition is good for the EV marketplace. But the US legacy automakers are going to have a rough row to hoe for quite a while. In the meantime Tesla will continue to have huge amounts of cash coming in from not only their EV sales but from their rapidly emerging other business units.
Things don't look good for Ford and GM.
Several of the Attorney's General are already pushing back on California's stupid 2035 ice ban. Tesla has come a long way but Atari owned 75 percent of the home console market. By the late 2000's were more or less parted out sold off and I don't think are now even around. If Tesla is smart the board will toss Musk out.

Hopefully CA and NY and a few other states wake up and realize 2035 is a pipe dream, and zero in on getting oil prices back down while we wait. It can be done.

there will never be an ice ban in CA come 2035

Yeah, well, if Tesla votes yes to a union Americans will drop them like the other makers and by Chinese built cars if they cant compete.
EVs are like remote controlled toys, anyone can build them and everyone will. But no one can easily replace the ICE vehicles that the legacy makers build.

I am not sure what American buyers would do; I would be afraid of what Musk would do. He might shut down the American plants; who the heck knows? That's a lot of people, more than 20K in the Fremont plant alone.

This particular section of the BITOG Forums is for discussion of Electric Vehicles. The topic of my original post was to point out how Tesla has now manufactured 5 million EV's and most impressively a million of them just in the last 6 months.

Pointing out how many vehicles in total are being manufactured by other makers and what their sales figures are is irrelevant to this discussion. How many EV's they have made, and how proitable they are are the relevant points and tangentially, how their slim profit margins on their ICE vehicles means they don't have much capital to invest in the emerging EV market.

If "EV's are like remote controlled toys" and "anyone can build them" what are they waiting for ?
Don't you think the legacy automakers would love to build and sell a million or so EV's a year at a 20% margin ? I guess just anyone can't build them. At least to perform like a Tesla in consumer's hands and certainly not to perform like a Tesla on the balance sheet.

I saw a news report that the UAW crybabies are pushing back against their employers increasing EV production. Their claims are that it takes less workers to build an EV. I guess they will demand another wage increase to make up for their lack of work when more EV's are being built, especially with increased use of robotics.

But they will continue on with their ICE vehicle production as long as they can. I get it. The demand for EV's is still tiny compared to the overall ICE market. But every year that they continue to operate as they have, Tesla is still moving ahead.

I was just responding to your words, which you can see you brought up Tesla's other business units, correct?
Well, the legacy automakers you discount have boatloads of cash coming in from their "ICE" business units, so much so that Ford or GMs worse profit year in the last 10 years still beat or matched Teslas best year. So hands down, GM and Ford have way more money coming in from their what you personally call their other business units making ICE vehicles.
You then speculate for some reason that things dont look good for GM or Ford even though they make more money than Tesla.

Your words, not mine=
"Competition is good for the EV marketplace. But the US legacy automakers are going to have a rough row to hoe for quite a while. In the meantime Tesla will continue to have huge amounts of cash coming in from not only their EV sales but from their rapidly emerging other business units.

Everyone building cars can build an EV, but can it be competitive and profitable?

Only tesla has shown they can do that.

Case in point - Toyotas BZ4X is a dismally performing EV from arguably the best ice builder in the world.

Tesla has the X Factor…..
Lots of other EV are bland and boring.

I was at a hospital the other day and doctor’s parking lot looked like a Tesla dealership. Doctors can afford other brand EVs.

When Cyber Truck finally gets to mass production….. there will be total pandemonium for it. Similar to Cabbage Patch craze from 1983. People will go GAGA over Tesla truck.

Ford Lightning is very boring and not worth the money.

At first. Total pandemonium? From the reports leaking from inside it's a total dumpster fire and has terrible fit and finish problems. The wind noise is supposedly really bad and hasn't been fixed. Musk now wants sub 10 micron precision ( yeah sure) and as of last week the dolt wants to add a tungsten-carbide coating to the cybertruck, which he clearly doesn't understand how it works. Back in January wasn't Musk supposed to show off the production Cybertruck in August then September? Every time I turn around it has more problems. There's apparently no leadership at Tesla any longer.
