Tesla Fires

I saw the video and it’s definitely not an accident.

Yep lithium ion batteries will catch fire if damaged, not explode like that. This CT and the F-150 used in the NOLA attack were both rented on Turo. I'd hate to be the owners of these vehicles, they will be dealing with litigation for years to come.

Are they in any way insured by Turo in case of losing a vehicle?

DECATUR, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A Tesla Cybertruck went up in flames overnight in DeKalb County.

It happened just before 3 a.m. The entire back of the truck burned, and the back tires even melted.

Firefighters say the truck was on the lot of a dealership on Church Street in Decatur.

Fire officials say they believe the battery may have started the fire, but they continue to investigate.

"The evil knuckleheads picked the wrong vehicle for a terrorist attack. Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards. Not even the glass doors of the lobby were broken," Elon Musk wrote on X.

the Cybertruck that exploded in Las Vegas was rented on same app used to rent the pickup truck in New Orleans, law enforcement sources said: ABC

They said on TV last night the CT stainless shell contained much of the explosion. None of this is news, it was known that this was going to happen it was just a question of when, it has nothing to do with the vehicles they used, in fact it may have been a good thing the mistakenly chose EV vehicles possibly thinking it would make a bigger bomb, imagine if they would have used a rented box truck like Oklahoma city.

Yes, it looks like the CT was a poor choice, thank God! Although they might have been using it for some other purpose. The upcoming days are going to be very interesting. Sad way to start a new year, sending prayers.

Whether Tesla or ICE is more prone to fire, I've only personally seen a few vehicle fires in my nearly 40 years of life. All but one was a clapped out old vehicle where I presume a brake or transmission fluid line leaked onto a hot exhaust component. The one that wasn't, was a car that hit a bridge pylon at highway speed. None were EVs. Continuing this train of thought, I think, based on my experience seeing a ton of people die, that eating proper, drinking in moderation or not at all, and maintaining a healthy body composition through aforementioned diet as well as exercise, is going to matter a whole lot more than ICE vs EV in what takes you out. These threads remind me of 400# gun nuts who carry "100%, everywhere, even in the shower, because things happen..." and yet they don't have health insurance.

The only car fire I've seen was a Ferrari F355. It burned to the ground in the middle of the street.

Putting fires aside, (along with what caused them), the market is collapsing for these things. People who put down deposits are walking away. Tesla is now threatening to forfeit their deposits if they don't complete the purchase and take delivery.

And to be fair, it's not just Tesla or EV's. The light truck market in general is collapsing everywhere, due to insane sticker prices. Many of which are going well into 6 digits.

When you factor in loan interest and depreciation, people are losing tens of thousands of dollars before they get the thing home. It's why banks are presently rejecting one in five auto loans.

And they most likely should be rejecting far more than that. Due to the fact that currently over 1/4 of car loans are presently underwater. Factor in what people owe on their houses and credit cards, and we're a nation drowning in a sea of debt.

Always said they seem like the underpinnings of stealth military vehicle - I can even see an unmanned assault vehicle eventually - “land drone” 🧐

Is the pie chart in post #15 made up from mere "total number of occurrences"?

Would correlating this brand-based data with the proportion of each brand of registered vehicle on the road -resulting in an "X fires per 10,000 registered vehicles of a particular brand" database- be more representative?

The video at the Tesla dealership - why no price stickers (Monroney sheets) on the trucks?

Ah, never mind - they put them in the back window I see now.

At least one person had a morose sense of humor back in the day.

Total fires 2015-2023

Yeah Hyun/Kia had a rash of fires on the 2.4 Theta II because people weren't properly reattaching the fuel supply lines after replacing the cam-driven high pressure fuel pump. Being that it it's driven by the camshaft, the pump is directly on top of the engine and if there is a large fuel leak, bad things happen. As I understand it, Hyun/Kia released updated procedures for reattaching the fuel lines. I don't know what the details of that are though.

There were some people that caught it, I was on a Sonata web forum when I owned mine and some people smelled the fuel and went investigating before a fire resulted. I remember there being a video on the forum showing the leak, it was a lot of gas.

In all fairness to Tesla, it looks like the CT fire was an act of terrorism. Elon was quick to respond defending the CT.
Yeah, this is a confusing thread. Two different subjects vehicles starting on fire and an act of terrorism in Vegas where someone intentionally blew up a Cybertruck.
I did say in this forum more than a year ago I think. I always wonder if lithium vehicles can become tools for terrorists. Even more so when one is completely self driving, it could self drive to a destination and blow up. Call me crazy but it sounds more dangerous than a drone threat.
