The old Audi had one. The element failed and the thing was still stuck nicely to the oil pan. Why the previous owner put one on, I'll never know, since the factory mounted oil pan heater still worked perfectly. Audis of that generation used oil pan heaters because of a fire in Quebec with a block heater, as if it makes a safety difference. I suppose the previous owner figured out that it didn't have a block heater and decided to do something, when that something was already there.
