First thing to check is the sending unit. That is most likely.
A good manual or online charts will tell you the values cold, warm, and hot.
Check the voltage or resistance with a multimeter.
But maybe a connection , wiring, or dash gauge is bad.
The sending unit is not that much $, so maybe you can just throw that part in and take your best shot right away, if you are uncomfortable with testing it.
