Telephone Solicitation

Hmmm..I can't possibly see how it's illegal. Sending it back won't do anything to decrease your junkmail, it's only a "feel good" thing. The best way to reduce junk mail is to register with the DMA:

Of course (and speaking of being an a$$), the DMA can also be used to send sacks of junk mail to someone you feel deserves it

Use the Opt Out list for credit card companies:

Btw, the US national do not call list does work and has teeth if the calls keep coming. File a complaint here:

Note the exception for charities, political organizations (a fine example of your gum'mint at work), and telephone surveyors.

In addition each telemarketing firm by law must keep and honor it's own do not call list. It's not difficult to get money from them if they don't and many people have. It why you should at least tell them to place you on theirs before you put down the phone. There have long been regulations in place to prohibit telemarking to cell phones so that shouldn't be a problem.

I receive zero calls and very limited junk mail these days from using the above methods.

The best thing I did was get a new number with Vonage. Guard that number like a golden egg, and give out a cell number to anyone that 'needs' my number.

When the cell is off, which is during peak telemarketing times, their computerized calling tools register it is a voicemail line and remove the number from the list as a dud.

The Jerky Boys have some good ideas, too, like speaking with an accent or acting senile.

Have a laugh at the telemarketer's expence.

(TM) Mr So-n-so, did you know our services could save you.....blah, blah, blah...

(your response) Hmmmmm...so what are you wearing?

I also send the junk mail back in the pre paid envelopes. I have noticed that some companies are starting to put barcodes on the envelope, along with a statement that says its illegal to do this sort of thing.

I wonder if the barcode is a way of identifying who the mail comes back from?

I don't care,I just cut the barcode out and send it back anyways.

I just got a spam call from McTavish Logistics, a moving company in Ontario, 416-848-8891 according to the number in the message. Not only did they block their caller ID, which is illegal, they used a recorded message, which is also illegal in Canada. Another phone spammer here who uses recorded messages in Safetech Alarms (416) 229-9902). I still have to drop by their Willowdale Ave address, and send them the bill, for wasting my time and interrupting my precious BITOG browsing.

Fortunately, July 2007 is the time when the official Do No Call list will start being implemented in Canada.

what is this telephone solicitation? i have a cell phone. ive never gotten anyone rnging me up to try and sell me things. that just sounds stupid.

for you people with this problem, why do you bother to have a landline? either cancel it alltogether get a cellphone!, or change the number atleast if you cant give up being wired to a house.

I remember once I got like 3 calls a day after around 4 o clock. I was sitting infront of my FLATSCREEN watching family guy when another survey person called.. I quickly ran to the TV while stewie was taking and put it to the speaker.
He was talking about world domination or something, they hung up pretty quick

"Take me off your calling list." That's all I say. I won't even listen to what the survey or donation is about.

Ya. I hate them !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At work, after making sure it's a seller, I rudely tell them that they've reached a business that sells product, ask them if they want to buy something. When they say "uuuh, no" I tell them I don't want to buy anything either. I'm in the business of selling stuff.

A long while ago, I re-recorded the "the number you have dialed is disconnected" message from the phone company and put it on my answering machine. Friends still laugh about that one. Hey, if you KNOW me you know it's a joke and will leave a message. Typically we got a lot of "UNKNOWN" calls, a few a day and ignore them. This is more recently though and they have ceased.

When I pickup the phone and say hello like 3 times. If no one talks then I hangup. I used to have caller ID but the majority of them are privacy/blocked, restricted number so got rid of that.

If the telemarketer, survey or donation people start to talk I wait until they finish and say "sorry I'm not interested." I found that when you fill out those sweepstakes or win a car things, that likely goes in to the telemarketing list. Most of the phone call on the answer machine are you won something or refinance you home. If they tell me I won a free vacation, I will say no thanks you can have it.

ALS, that's a mistake you'll never make again. I understand that giving to public broadcasting is worse.

NHPR (NH public radio) only asks once per year for a donation and I give them $100. I rarely get donation calls.
