telemarketers...

I also simply hang up within seconds of finding out its a TM. I get less angry, I move on with my day a lot faster and it is very satisfactory to cut them off mid sentence/word.

Try catalogchoice.org, a free service that helps stop unwanted mail. It has worked well for me.

It's about to get worse Otis.

Elections are coming in November and all the politicians will be working the phones beforehand.

I never say a word to these telemarkers. All they hear on my end is "Click"

Agreed. Why waste your time?

But contrary to what some of you may believe, the overwhelming majority of these people are just like anyone, struggling to make a living in a thankless job.

I know a few of them, as there's a large TM place in our town that is always hiring. It's not a great job for sure.

Not like they are in a great job market to find something better out there.

and how much energy am i waisting stopping (doing whatever it is im doing) to awnser the frigging phone for the umphteenth time that day ???
Yesterday the same place called 3 times after i had asked them not to call back and said i was not intrested..
They ARE persistant sales people on the phone calling and bothering ME when im trying to relax or get my own stuff done..

ALL you sticking up for the poor telemarketers can take my share of there frigging calls and sweet talk them all you want.. im OVER them..

I used to be like you. Angry about it. Once you realize not much you can do about it except answer/no thank you or ignore you will remain frustrated.

I get daily calls working at home. Does not bother me much.

In Canada, there was (is?) an exemption for "market research", so telemarketers are now using the flippin' no call list as a LIST OF LEADS to do their "market research". I signed up for our no-call list and began receiving more telemarketing calls within the week.

We no longer have a land line so I am unsure how or if this has been fixed!

Political parties, charities, and debt collectors can still get through, though

Pttt.....everybody gets through.
I'm on the Do-Not-Call list. It worked for a couple of years, but it is now worthless. Matter-of-fact, when the sales calls started again, I signed up again just to be sure. We probably get 4-5 sales calls a day now and we just don't answer a number that we don't recognise. We used to report them, but how many times have you heard of a telemarketer getting successfully prosecuted? This has turned into a worthless law that has no bite to it.

I am talking about the bulk ads and flyers sent to the street address and not a specific person.

I believe that if you limited junk mail you would simply put the Post Office out of business sooner.

They depend on the steady revenue when they're not taking massive subsidies....

Agree 100%. Junk mail keeps our post office running. Junk mail doesn't bother your meal or your favorite TV show. Junk mail won't wake you up from your sleep our interrupt your shower when you are expecting a call from a sick relative.

Well, not totally a worthless law.
I have been 100% free from sales ads on my cell and home phone.
Business line can be inundated, though.

Wow! That's a lot of calls you're getting! I have one phone line not on the DNC Registry but I'm not getting as much calls. Did you just create an account online in some website? Or maybe these callers got your number from another telemarketing company? Telemarketers also do that. They sell, share and discuss your information.

And if you're thinking of annoying them, do pranks.

Oops! I forgot to mention. I pull pranks on telemarketers, too. I never run out of tips because there's a lot at http://www.callercenter.com/articles/14waystoannoytelemarketers.html. I suggest you check.

I got a call the other morning from some charity, not one that I have ever donated to. I told them no and that I was on the do not call list, I'm didn't want to be bothered. The lady started making an argument with me about how charities are allowed to call me no matter what... Not doing much for her case... But hopefully they took me off their list. The Red Cross is really bad too.

It's possible that they did. It's also possible that they sold your number to everyone else as a number that has a greater-than-average chance that somebody will answer the phone when rang.

I took a call from a company I use for web hosting. They call maybe once every couple months to see if I'm happy with their service. The guy starts telling me about some free trial for a web design service they are offering and he'll "send me some information about it". "OK.". Never asked if I wanted it, never asked if I was interested, but apparently he took that to mean "OK, sign me up".

Within a few minutes I get an e-mail welcoming me to this new service, which is free for 30 days. Call them back, and after waiting on hold for 15 minutes, I politely but firmly ask to cancel the service. "Oh, I see you signed up... Today! Why do you want to cancel?". I point out I did not give consent to it and the guy pitching it never asked if I wanted the service. The guy I was talking to understood my predicament and agreed the guy wasn't supposed to sign me up if I did not explicitly give consent, but I got it taken care of.
