Somewhere along the way the internet perpetuated the old wives tale that Japanese screws must have JIS drivers which are significantly different than Phillips, but my own personal experience suggests it's myth like "don't leave batteries on a concrete floor."
It gets repeated enough and people just believe it. Yeah, I have some Vessels and they're nice screwdrivers.
