This is a bit off topic for the forum, but... ON page 129 of the latest R&T there's an article about NASCAR engines coated with teflon. Even mention of a Rusty Wallace record qualifying run with now lube in the rear end, just teflon coated gears. Why are we putting all of these additives in our engines? We should just rebuild them with teflon coated parts and forget about the oil.

I hope to see car makers go to Nikasil liners in automobile engines someday . Might could forget about bore polishing problems then and extend those drain intervals on out .

Fe would be at a minimum .

BMW tried using nikasil in the v8 engines in the early 90s. It was a disaster for them in the US because, as it turned out, there was a lot of sulfur in our fuel which gradually eroded the nikasil cylinder lining to the point where the engines wouldn't run properly anymore.

That cost them a bundle.
 
Note that some motorcycle manufacturers (like Honda) now use cylinder liners in their aluminum blocks not of just iron but of alloys that contain more nickle, copper, moly and other compounds to reduce friction, stabilize the bore's "roundness" under a wider temperature range and to transfer heat better. You'll see this technology in auto engines soon as it seems to work well in higher performing MC engines.
 
Teflon, many other polymer coatings, alloys of various types, and most recently cryogenically treated components. Racers will do anything to win.

BMW and nikasil, don't even go there...you can't pay me enough to get back into that saddle.

Honda uses this process also on their "H" series motors. I believe it is called "Ceremit"

Cryo works. If I rebuild my SAAB trans i'm going to get the new gears treated.
The VW V10 TDI is an amazing engine. I can't wait to see it in the US. I just hope that VW gets over some of the issues that they have currently. They need to get back to their roots a little bit with the performance aspect. Unfortunately I think that their a little more interested in this with Audi.

What are the thoughts here on Diesel? When I used to sell VW's a group came in and bougut up about 6 TDI Jettas in which they were going to use their 100% Biodiesel in. I'm thinking that there should be a lot more interest in this stuff. It's completely renewable and can be mixed in any proportion with reg. diesel. Plus, with the advances made to these engines, 10 cyl TDI around 310 hp and 545lb-ft and quiet, there aren't the drawbacks that used to exist.
