Tecumseh HSK35 - Bad Ignition Key Wiring

Not sure how to title this post but the wiring for the plastic ignition key on my snow blower snapped and I can't figure how to jump or fix this

The the bottom to the vertical white plastic piece held the green wire which is now dangling below

Can these plastic keys simply be bypassed?

Yes. Sometimes these keys ground out the low side of the coil, so the switch "on" or "off" will have the opposite effect.

Follow the wire and see what other interlocks are involved. Sometimes you can let it run with your hand off the deadman if it's in neutral with auger off, for example.

Try to start it now with the green wire just as it is.

well, the engine will run just fine with the wires just like they are in the picture, as long as they don't ground out , so would need some tape to protect. Now, having said that, it probably won't shut off. It looks like the groundinf switch shown in the picture is the one that kills the ignition when the throttle is pushed all the way to slow, and then further. If so, then the plastic key should still work to remove and kill the engine.

LOL.... that was fun. Started right up but then I couldn't turn it off. Pulling to key out didn't work either.

Was hoping to avoid replacing the wiring or the clip as I can't find that particular piece among the parts listings I've found on the web

No way around this?

Get a 69 cent wall switch from home depot and rig it up somehow.

If you ever get in a pickle with outdoor power equipment that won't shut off, you can get in and pop the spark plug wire off with a stick or other non conductive thing, or put the choke on, or turn the fuel off. (Listed in order of speediness and desirability).

Not sure why pulling the plastic key out didn't shut it off, unless it has been in there so long the contacts corroded, but there is always another way to get around every problem. You can mount an on/off toggle switch somewhere that it is grounded to the engine, and run a wire from the wire in the picture to it. Of course on will be off, and off will be on, so be sure to mark it as such. If the switch has a place for 2 wires, you need to run one of the connections to ground.

The switch on my snow blower went bad. I replaced it with a toggle switch and rubber boot like this:

It's been fine since then.

Engaging the choke should shut it off.
