Rebuilding a carb on a Craftsman snowblower with a Tecumseh carb. And when I removed the float a spring fell out that was between the float pin. Question is.... how is the spring oriented during installation. It has a long tail on one side and a shorter tail on the other?

One way will hold it to the float better than the other. Good luck!
I have yet to put one of those springs back when putting a Tecumseh carb back together. Useless.

If this is one that has a rubber float needle seat.
I have found the easiest way to replace them is to blow them out using compressed air. Place your blow gun tip on the fuel hose inlet nipple. Usually a quick shot of air will blow them out.
Put a couple drops of oil on the new one and a small piece of metal rod or the blunt end of the appropriate size drill bit will be a good tool to push it back into its home.
