What I hate most is when they over-torque the drain plug. I had to use a pipe wrench to get it off of my mom's car because everything else stripped it from being on so tight and even with the pipe wrench it was a battle, it has big huge teeth marks in it from the pipe wrench, heh.

Not to mention the fact most places, including dealers, never replace the crush washer. I use my washer approx 3 times, turning it over each time which allows for more "crush" and then replace it.

If my shop manager ever saw me going near a filter with a wrench, he'd break my arm with it. But that was a fair time ago. Maybe things are changing.

For someone who is so anal about what oil and filter are put on their car, why wouldn't they do it themselves? (Assuming he doesn't have a physical handicap which would allow bong use but not car maintenance)
Vtec I can just imagine the look on the guys face when you told him he should be using a torque wrench and wasn't properly servicing your vehicle. I bet they had a good laugh after you left. I wonder if he gets that often?

wow this thread just made my day. i wish my car could get to 2000k rpmS. How do u stay under the speed limit? maybe i need a vtec. i thought i was okay with a 6800 rpm rev limiter. but when you hit 2 million Revolutions per MinuteS whoa!
I work as a tech part-time at a W-M lube garage. I'm also university and college educated. Not all guys doing this are stereotypical 'gorillas'. As for 'why someone would go to one of these places', some don't have a choice, and it is better to go to one, and have an oil change done, than to not do regular oil changes. The actual chances of the job being screwed up and the car blowing up are fairly minor. Getting a little tired of the general bias against this industry and the people in it. Every business, every one, has good and bad examples of its kind.
As for procedures, we screw the filter on as tight as we can by hand - and are told repeatedly not to even think of using a wrench when installing a new filter.

Oh me...oh my, this thread has been a hoot. When I saw 57 responces to "techs didn't torque the oil filter", I had to check it out. Thanks for the laughs on an otherwise dismal Monday. But does anyone know the torque specs for the oil fill cap? Any make or model will do.
I think you are describing screw it on lightly until the gasket contacts the base, then tighten 3/4 turn more to properly compress the gasket -- NOT 3/4 turn AFTER you've first tightened it hand tight.
Many filters have 3/4-16 threads so turning ONE FULL turn would advance it 1/16" and compress the gasket that much.
I suppose if you got yourself a K&N filter with the nut on the end, you could torque it down with a socket and torque wrench, but I have no idea what the torque specs are suppose to be.
I swear, the stuff i read sometimes astonishes me.
Instead of starting a thread talking smack about someones method of working on your car, you could spend that time learning how to do a simple oil change. It's not only this thread either, i've seen a few of these threads fly by here. To all the smack talkers, Hold your tounges until you learn how to pull a skid plate.

Never heard of using a torque wrench on a filter although I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't. For me I have always tightened it down by hand and the use the filter wrench to tighten it down to what I feel is right. So far I've never had any problems getting them back off so I must not be getting them too tight.
I do remember a guy that I worked with that bought a new Chevy truck and at the first oil change brought it to the shop to change the oil. Wrench or a punch through the filter only succeded in mangling the filter. Ended up taking a small chisel and hammer to the rim to break it loose. Evidently someone at the factory got a little carried away.
