Some of our stores have lock boxes that the phones go into at the start of shift and don't come out until break or quitting time because it is such a problem.

A lot of truth here. How many of us know how to shoe a horse? When I was a boy, my grandfather 'took pity' on me because I didn't know very basic things.

Fact is, in a changing world, technology plays a very significant role in determining what we do, and do not, need to know. Counting change is not a necessary skill for most.

As for declining math scores, when/if it becomes a national priority, they will come up.

That's my nickel minus $.03
