taurus abs ring on axle hub

on my 2001 taurus the toothed ring that triggers the abs sensor for the front wheel has come loose it looks like it is normally a press fit on the axle shaft, I dont have the axle out but I can move it back and forth with a screwdriver and it was beginning to rub on the hub bolts. The reason I was looking at it is a code for no signal at the front left wheel
anybody know if there is an easy fix or does the axle shaft have to be replaced? I thought about cleaning it up and applying some red loktite and then slide it back into position

ok I found out you can get a new tone ring seperately but it might just be better although more expense to replace the axle anybody done either?

Have not done one. Should be doable. It will be a fairly involved job unfortunately.

Any reason not to cut the ring off, pull the ABS fuse, and call it a day? I think ABS systems work just fine as normal brakes.

If the ring is loose, it is broken. Putting on just a new toothed ring can be a PITA. Easiest solution is just to swap in a new halfshaft and be done with it. Less time, less grease on your hands/clothes. If you get a good deal on just the ring, heat it in the oven first, and slide it over the CV, sometimes hard to get it on straight though. I think FoMoCo might have a special service tool for that particular job, don't know for sure though.

In the shop, it is literally a 10 minute job. DIY, jack up the corner by the subframe so the lower control arm is loose/swinging free. Remove axle nut, knock CV loose of hub with dead blow. Remove the lower pinch bolt nut, tap it out with a hammer. Long pry bar under subframe, over lower control arm, pry down and the lower control arm will swing free. Pull hub outward till CV stub clears hub, pry inner CV from transaxle.

thanks for replys , yep the ring was broken,I broke it in two pieces and removed for now ,I will price a halfshaft ,its my kids car and would kind of like the abs to work,we have some nasty weather here in winter, if it was my mine it would be done
