Talked To Another Engine Shop And They Use 10w30

I had someone in my shop from another engine shop when i was getting a delivery of bulk 5w20 and 5w30 and he could not believe it because i should know rebuilt engines only like 10w30. this guy rebuilt engines since the late 70's but really knew nothing about oil. I told him i was paying $1.70 a quart (bulk) and he said its because its not 10w30 O boy!
I told him we rebuild them to spec and use what the engine makers say to use, he was suprised

Was he suggesting it should be used as a break in oil or permanently after a rebuild? I think you summed it up by saying he really knew nothing about oil.

I agree!

Seems that 10w30 is OK, but IF a 5w30 is used, the warranty is void and the engine will blow-up!

You got that totally BACKWARDS. On this board, 10-30 is hated and only the thin oils are hyped. Why try to twist it around?

The most highly regarded rebuild shop in my area uses only 10w30 or 15w40. Been in business for 40 plus years, go figure.

Dad still has a habit of only ordering 10w30 when he restocks oil. Granted, 80% of the cars we service(we don't do many oil changes) do fine on 10w30, but would be just as fine on 5w30. I guess old habits die hard. I think he's one of the best mechanics in the area(not because he's my father)but he doesn't share his son's interest in learning about motor oil.

If it ain't broke don't fix it, and it really wasn't broke till the mfgrs started using thinner oils to improve CAFE scores...
