For Those that don't know I work for a small Radiator shop in a small town. Last year we purchased a battery from Pep Boys and installed it in a customers car. The battery has a 2 yr free replacement.

Today the car comes in on a hook. Battery has ZERO volts. I tried to charge it and it wont do anything. Obvously something in the battery broke. If it had some voltage I would assume something else could be the problem. Customer said he drove to the store, came out and nothing happened when he turned the key. No dash lights, nothing.

I called Pep Boys who we bought the battery from @ 2:45P and told them what was going on. They said they will be right down with the new one. I told the waiting customer that I will have them running by closing time which is 5p.

Pep boys is 3 miles away.

4:30 rolls around and no battery so I called to see whats goin on. Pep boys says that both of there trucks are broke down. Been broke down since Wednesday!

Then they tell me that the do have a rental but don't want to put any miles on it because it will cost them money.

I was becoming livid! Then they ask me if I can bring the battery to them. No I can't! I'm the only employee at the shop, I rode my bike to work and the customers car is broke, I can't drive it and I can't leave the shop to go get it.

Why didn't they tell me that they can't deliver it @ 2:45 when I called and my boss was there and I could have used his truck to go get it? I would not have had a problem with the this.

The counter clown/ commercial sales guy started back in with the sob story and I cut him off mid sentence. I basically told him that I had a defective battery, a customer in my shop w/o a way home and that I can't leave to go get it and they WERE going to bring me the replacement battery or stuffs going to start running downhill.

It showed up @ 5:15p but I feel like I had to pull teeth to get it handled.

Chris, being a former Ford/Lincoln-Mercury/Subaru parts counter guy, I fully understand what you're saying.

By just being up front with the shop, all the nonsense could be avoided. Just seems like either a) they didn't care or b) they should be reprimanded by their boss for treating the customer (you) like khrap (thanks Pablo, I like that one!). That behavior is simply unacceptable.

Yep, thats typical 'customer service' now or days from most retail stores. They told you that they would deliver a new battery ASAP just to get you off the phone. Do you really think someone making $8 bucks and hour really cares about customer service.

I was at the grocery store the other day and I noticed all the employees at the deli worked extra slow on purpose so that all the people waiting in line would just get fed up with the waiting and leave.

I would draw lots of conclusions from "A national chain of auto parts/service stores that has 2 delivery vehicles broken for more than 1 day"

Feel free to brief the person that bought the battery and maybe 50 of his friends.
