Taking a Greyhound bus for the second time in my life.

If I rate public transportation,

European 250 km/hr inter city trains 1st class 10.0

Amtrak coach outside the Northeast corridor 2.0

Long distance inter city bus 1.0

Took the train from Rome to Pompeii and back. Speedometer on the overhead LCD screens showed 300km/h at one point. I could not believe we were going so fast, the ride was super smooth. You could barely hear the rails except when crossing over switches close to the station.

Did you take any Tranitalia local trains? Those were fun. Well except when full and sweaty! Standing room only - the smell - kinda rhymes with Tranitalia.

We rode all the time locally around Pompeii - Napoli to Sorrento and stops. It was fine IF we get got a seat.

We rode Frecciarossa but not Italo.

Pompeii was only a day trip so we did not venture out of the city other than wine tasting at a vineyard nearby. That's awesome that you got to stay there a few days and venture locally. There is so much to see it is overwhelming. I would gladly pay to be part of an archeological dig, even if it meant grunt work.

I'll make a post one day with all of the pictures I took. I was fortunate enough (my wife did not like it) to experience Pompeii with rain, thunder and lightning.

Took a 4 hour bus Monday in Thailand to a beach town, it was comfortable and nice. saw a few Hiluxes snorkeling and a cool tractor getting gas and towing a swamp boat. Its monsoon season still and raining every morning but the afternoons are pretty.

I thought Thailand drives on the left side of the road. Does the picture mean some parts of the country do not?

Yep, photos was driving southbound on highway 4. Not sure if I got that road name exactly right.

3 weeks? You’re practically a local lol.

Were these murals from Pompeii or another site?
Yes all Pompei. As you know pictures don't do the area justice. Did you see Hurculaneum? (better than Pompeii IMHO). Vesuvius itself. Paestum with Greek ruins was amazing to me as well. Positano and of course Amalfi.

I wanted to visit Salerno but we didn't make it there.

We "lived" in a little town called Sant'Agnello far enough away from Sorrento to be out of tourists, maybe 30-40 minute walk. The people were great. Sorrento is a great place to dine, regardless. Again just walking and trains to or near the spots with the occasional cab ride if living it up.

I want to do 3-4 weeks in a small town in the north of Italy, but right now all kinds of family issues.

@GON Your post reminds me of this video I watched recently. Hopefully your trip was worry free in comparison.

There's some pretty wacky Greyhound videos on Youtube.... I was watching one where the guy and his girlfriend wound up in Denver but the driver's shift was over so they locked everyone inside the bus station but all their luggage was out in the bus where they didn't have access to it. Then came the very real concern another driver would show up and take their bus (and their luggage) and drive off with it! It was a coast-to-coast journey and Greyhound was constantly re-issuing new tickets with new routings every time the bus was late and missed a connection. It was crazy.

Greyhound has had a bunch of ownership changes in recent years and they are now owned by a German company if I remember right. One of the things they are doing now is getting out of their traditional "downtown" bus stations in favor of new stations out by the highway, like at truck stops and McDonald's. Unfortunately that spells the end for a lot of classic old bus stations (if old architecture is your thing).

I rode Greyhound only once as a teen. I and a friend had gone on a wilderness trip into the Blue Ridge mountains. We were isolated for a week and received no outside news. We caught a bus at some hick town back to Baltimore. Upon our arrival we were greeted by armed National Guardsmen. While away there was a Baltimore city riot and part of the town burned and looted. Guard was called out. We had no idea. Will never forget that reception.
