Hello All,

I bought a new to me certified used Kia Forte from my local kia dealer. This is my first experience buying a car. I asked the sales man about my license plate/tags/registration. He advised me it would all be mailed to me because I pay extra fees for the dealership to handle all that stuff, which is fine.

However I am slowly getting more nervous and nervous, I purchased the car on the 18th of august, and the temp tags expire on October 18th. This gives that stuff roughly 4 more weeks to show up. How long should I wait until I start making calls?

If it helps the car has been purchased and is being used in the state of kentucky.

Thanks!

Call the dealer when you get down to your last week. Then call the title clerk. Don't worry, they do this stuff every day.

In North Carolina, temporary tags are usually good for 30 days, and the license plate agency usually gets tags turned around in a few weeks. You still have a month to go; you should be fine.

Did you give the dealer power of attorney to register for you?

Do you have carbon copies of the title app etc that are serial numbered? Are there (state) phone numbers on those apps you can call?

The dealer might be dragging their feet paying off their financing, etc.

I have no idea, I signed all of their paper work they said I needed to sign, I am fairly certain I gave them the power of attorney. They held my hand through the entire process.. like i kinda expected them too.

What does worry me is they messed up my first name, but I caught it during the paper signing and they fixed it right there.

In California, one of my renewal stickers never made it. I called the DMV and they confirmed the check had cleared and gave me instructions to get a so-called replacement sticker.
Good luck,
Kevin

Thanks for the link, I just found a email on the site, and sent a email and asked some of my questions.

That was fast.. I just received a response stating the paper work was processed at my local dmv on the 12th and that i should contact them on the status of everything.

Good thing im going to pay my for my tags this weekend on my Saturn

Thanks again all, This has to be the most helpful forum board on the internet.

Thanks!

Don't worry, I't may take a while. Ones I had a temp tag from different car that little independent dealer gave me. He could not find blank ones. I saw a cop checking it out ones and nothing happened.

Gee......when I bought my truck in December of last year, I got all the info I needed to register it and get the tag the day I completed the deal. No waiting.

Now when I bought my HD back in July in TN, I had to wait almost 30 days before the dealer paid the state sales tax on the bike so I could get the tag for it.

I guess living in a poor state has it's advantages.

In MN they are mailed to the dealer and you go pick them up. Once it took 2 weeks, last time it took 7. I had to go in and renew my 30 day temp tag. Not a huge deal but kind of annoying.

The larger used and all new car dealers in VA can issue your regular state plates, no waiting, period...

The lesser used dealers issue a computer printed temp tag that expires in 30 days and they can issue a second tag if necessary... If a title cannot be secured within 60 days, the dealer has to refund the buyers money and take car back...
