3rd Gen Taco calls for 75w85 gear oil, front & rear. Should I throw the 75w90 I have in it, or order the "correct" fluid? New to Toyotas.

Thanks!

Thanks! I should have searched for more that "Tacoma Diff" smh

You can safely substitute 75w-90 without any concern whatsoever. Gear oil viscosity ratings describe ranges of viscosity. A 75w-85 on the thick end of the range might be practically identical to many 75w-90 oils. Nothing to worry about.

If you already have 75w90 on hand, I would use it. But if using OEM grade makes you sleep better, use it. Either grade will work perfect in your Taco.

Never fails 🤣

I sell parts and fluid to a local toyota dealership. I literally sell them bulk valvoline 75w90 because there is a TSB/recall on all tacomas from 2012 up to 2023 models (last time i asked) to use 75w90 in both the front and rear diff. Apparently they sneakily change it over when the vehicle is in for another service as they were having to warranty differentials on a regular basis. they have been buying a couple hundred quarts from me every 2 weeks for at least the past year and a half.

I did a used oil analysis on my 21 that I posted in the used oil analysis section. I am planning to run a few different viscosities to see how they wear. So far i've only done the used oil analysis on 90wt and that wasn't very favourable. Currently running a 85wt since that was my plan before receiving the results from the 90wt... so far i'd recommend Tacoma owners run atleast a 110wt and I haven't even officially done a used oil analysis on it yet

I have never heard of that TSB. Why still spec 75w85? hmm

90W is great. Choose your favorite. Mobil, amsoil, valvoline - I like amsoil or amsoil SVG if I’m towing heavy.

I'm not sure, I wouldn't know about it had i not been contacted by the local dealership. Also, My guess is money? Toyota probably got a large deal on 75w85 at some point as well as it inflates the fuel economy by just enough to make Cafe happy in the US. Fuel economy only matters for tax purposes as it is sold off the lot. Not what it gets after the first oil change.
