I bought a used Samsung Galaxy tab A 10.1" off ebay (wi-fi only version) for about $145. It was pretty easy to root (simple instructions on xda and youtube). Once rooted you can selectively remove or disable the unneeded junk. I installed Resurrection Remix (nougat version) and am very pleased with the tablet. Incredible battery life and very satisfactory response for web browsing (I don't play games, but it probably would be overmatched for some of the most demanding ones).

I tried to root it and install Android. I found most of the videos skipped over stuff they assumed you knew. Being a novice, I didn't. I followed 1 video step by step constantly pausing it. I didn't do one step correctly and went to the next one. Brick! I can't do or undo anything with it. I bought a new one and started to set it up and just didn't care for it. I could remove some of the bloatware but much of it I could not find a way to do it.
Thanks for your input.

If it runs well and you can run the apps you want, then it doesn't matter - enjoy!

That's what I'm hoping for. If it doesn't, I'm only out a $100. Never had Apple so looking forward to it.

The first thing you should do with it is tap the Settings icon and go to General.

At the bottom-right is Reset. Go into that and tap Erase All Content and Settings, to make sure none of the previous owner's stuff and configuration remain, including any apps that might be hidden. That includes Safari, which, like me, the previous owner might not have preferred.

Erase all Content and Settings will return the iPad to its out-of-the-box configuration. Doing so will, if I remember correctly, make it restart once or twice and display a progress bar. Just let it do its thing.

My version 4 is running iOS 10.3.3.

I hope the previous owner included the charger and cord.

On 29 March 2016, Ixquick.com was officially "merged" with the same company's Startpage search engine[5] (a search engine with the privacy features of Ixquick, but using only Google search results[6]). Users entering ixquick.com are now automatically re-routed to startpage.com. However, at the end of Ixquick's merger notice, the company reports: "We think you're going to love StartPage, but if you prefer original Ixquick search results, don't worry. They are still available at ixquick.eu." Ixquick had long declared on its sites, that it operated in compliance with European Union privacy standards, and it retains its original European search engine.[10] As of 21 April 2018, ixquick.eu also redirects to startpage.com.

You can set up a custom version of StartPage. (I had both and had customized Ixquick the same way as StartPage but to search European servers only. But I deleted Ixquick upon the search engines' merger. Since the merger, Ixquick's search of European servers exclusively sometimes didn't work.)

For a custom setup, go to the "hamburger" at the top right of the startpage.com page (or Ixquick's) and choose settings. At the bottom you can save the customized page with the cookie it generates or by generating the custom-setup URL. I always delete all cookies, so I use the saved URL. But you may have to tap the plain-text URL choice and copy that. The obfuscated URL never works for me.

There's a link for Page 3 at the bottom of the results on Page 2, and so on. Try searching for something that would generate a zillion hits, such as motor oil, and go to the bottom of Page 2.

This is my customized StartPage URL:

Thanks for the info. It's a refurb and supposed to be cleaned and tested so I'll see. I get a cord and charger with it.

Also, Google which features you should turn off, to save battery and processing time.

I like to leave GPS and bluetooth on my daily iPhone when I'm out and about.
I leave both off on our home iPad
I set features like background refresh, GPS usage, and notifications to the most restrictive (i.e., no background refresh and no access to anything unless I'm using it and deem it that the app actually needs the feature.)

So, if you just surf the net, you can turn a lot of features off. I'm relatively new to Apple products, and I found everything just by Googling it or looking on Youtube.
