I posted before asking about best fluid for a T-56 w/ carbon fiber lined syncro blocker rings that clashes when cold and got some good responses. I ended up just putting in Dex III to at least start with known fluid and it didn't make a difference.

Well, I learned that in 2001 T-56's went to carbon but my 2000 has paper linings and supposedly they are sensitive to synthetics. I'm ready to try something new and wondered if there is a different set of suggestions for paper linings?

Some report Amsoil torque drive, despite being a synth, meets the spec and won't harm the paper. I never used any Amsoil but willing to give it a go if it can keep me from wearing the box out.

Friction materials in MT and AT transmissions are composed of fibers, fillers, and binders.

Your Tremec fiber is cellulose with the filler being diatomaceous earth, and the binder a phenolic resin.

Base oil type rarely affects operation, but the additive package may.

Any reason to think a boutique fluid could cure grinding (apparently even when hot when shifting real quick) vs fresh Walmart Dex 3? Or is this mechanic in a bottle thinking?

Some owners swear by Amsoil Torque Drive with the same paper/cellulose blocker material. I never used their stuff but if there is a chance $60 in fluid could eliminate the need for an $800 synchro kit and my labor?

Dex 3 has the same viscosity as Torque Drive with essentially the same friction characteristics, but there is no guarantee of a cure for an MT with a worn synchro assembly.

My 1999 Camaro with the original T-56 transmission with the cellulose blocking rings has done fine on the recommended GM Manual Transmission & Transfer case fluid GM #88861800......basically non-synthetic ATF Dex III with a slight improvement in the add package. I don't typically drive it below 40 deg F. ambient. Any slight sluggishness in the shifts for the first 1/2 mile or so or gone in about 5 minutes.

When I looked into possibly trying synthetics the only two I felt somewhat "comfortable" with after going through dozens of threads on the subject were Mobil 1 ATF and the Red Line D4. Those fluids experienced FAR less reported issues than many of the other MTL's or synthetic ATF's. I believe Tremec only recommends the Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. There are some well known speed/trans shops that don't recommend a synthetic fluid. I change out the GM fluid about every 5K miles as I know it shears fairly rapidly. That's 5+ years of driving for me.
