I'm not sure who to see about this (it's definitely not the dealer) - but my 2002 V6 Camaro only has 40,000 miles on it and I'm really having some shifting difficulties with it. I've got the T5 manual in it, and I've run Valvoline Durablend and Mobil 1 fluids in it (All Dexron compatible). I'm on my second clutch (first one slipped at 30K so I got a SPEC II installed at my dealer). Even though the clutch seems to be working ok, I'm not sure if this is a clutch or a transmission problem.These problems happened before the clutch install and didn't improve. I'm running a B&M Ripper shifter as well. The condition seems to have worsened over time, since I don't remember having these problems when she was new.
Here are the problems:
1. When idling in neutral, it is nearly impossible to press in the clutch and simply shift to 1st. I must always go to 3rd or 2nd and then into 1st. If I force 1st it will go, but it takes a lot of effort and has a clunk.
2. Sometimes once in 1st and driving, shifting into 2nd is almost impossible. The clutch is fully pressed in, but it just wont go. I back off and try again and it goes.
3. When idling up a hill in 1st in traffic, if I press in the clutch and pull the stick back to neutral it is EXTREMELY difficult and does so with a clunk.
For a car with 40K on it this really disturbs me since I haven't dogged it. I love it to death, and the new clutch works well when I'm simply shifting gears and rolling at a reasonable speed (no problems). All my problems occur at low to no speed.
Im not sure if I should suspect clutch fluid, master cyl, shifter (I use a B&M Ripper but never had this problem before), transmission fluid, or syncros. If there's a simple fix for this, I'd like to know. If anyone knows of a shop that specializes in T5 transmissions around Philadelphia let me know!
