Can a defective or misaligned neutral safety switch cause bad shifting?

I recently replaced the NSS on my 2015 Toyota 4Runner. I used an oem part. I believe I installed it correctly but the vehicle has started clunking into gear HARD. This happens when shifting into drive. The transmission operates otherwise normal.

Could this be related to the NSS or should I look somewhere else? Thanks!

Agree with above. In addition, make sure the engine is idling at the correct speed.

No, it won't affect shift quality. It only allows cranking of the engine to occur in park or neutral.

Could likely be the shift solenoid.

The MLPS could cause weird E4OD performance in OBD1 Fords, but I don't think they were even capable of setting range codes (although it could sense excessive converter slip).

But I agree '15 would flag something. Are you pulling codes with an upper end scanner? I don't know if any of these would be manufacturer specific or might show as B or U codes?
