Valvoline says its dex/merc is recomended for toyotas. Does this mean that most de/.mercs are probably compatible with t-iv? Also what about multi vehicle and universal tranny fluids. I'm thinking of either draining the camry and refilling with quakerstate multivehicle or dex/merc from valvoline or another manufacturer. Any thoughts?

Me too. Amsoil makes great ATF, and I use it in both of our Toyotas in place of T-IV.

The nearest Toyota dealer sells genuine T-IV for under $5 a quart so it's hard to justify using anything else. I added a Magnafine filter and a bottle of Lubeguard Red when I D&R'd my Corollas ATF so I'm good to go.
If I had to use something else I'd probably use Castrol Import or Walmart Dexron VI (which states it 'is suitable for use' in place of T-IV).

The Castrol Import vehicle is good stuff as well. I just dont like the Toyota/Mobil 3309 stuff.

no it doesn't! maxlife atf merc dex is a special case! t-iv is a highly friction modified fluid just like maxlife merc/dex atf. most merc.dex's are not highly friction modified. mike

Which Toyota? Depending on the year and the model, some required Dexron-III or an earlier version, some required Toyota T-IV (3309) or an earlier version, some required Toyota WS. They are NOT interchangable.

Many of the near-universal ATFs can be used in more than one of these applications. You must check the original spec for the transmission in question before you select the fluid.

Toyotas for years have used dexronii/iii/mercon equivalent ATFs. So if yours is old enough and requires a dexron, than ANY dexron/mercon equivalent should work well.
And, most of their PS systems use dexron as the PSF.

If your Toyota requires TIV/3309, then you must use it or an equivalent. Equivalents are those blended and full synthetic universal or multivehicle ATF's. Plenty to choose from.

If yours requires WS, either use it or a thinner ATF like Redline D6 or Amsoil ATL.

I agree that T-IV is nothing special and that's why I added the Lubeguard red. I believe the LG will improve the T-IV with regard to heat breakdown.

So the Castrol is fine to mix with the factory T-IV for a drain and refill?

As my friend Mr.unDummy stated; yes it sure is.I used it in my old RX,and it worked well.(that was my experimental trans.re type-IV fluid.) because it was a problematic transmission anyway U140F,I figured what the Heck.

No real issues, just the lazy 1st to 2nd shift. Maybe I`m just used to quicker shifting transmissions. The RX I have now isnt much better between 1st and 2nd gear. I guess it`s the smooth luxury thing their trying to portray. But when I need to move out in a hurry,I want the dam n thing to move,Know what I mean? thats where this 5spd I have now works better. when I need it,it moves.Out of all the fluids I tried in my 01 RX,I think I would rate it like this: 1.Wolf`s Head universal fluid
2.Mobil-1 atf
3 Castrol multi import fluid

It didnt seem to like the Valvoline max life stuff,or its own Toyota fluid (if thats not bizarre,I dont know what is)

I think Im going to try the Wolf's Head Universal. Your 01 tranny seems to be just like mine is. My SIL has an 01 also and her's is better, more crisp shifting without being harsh. Very Lexuslike!

How do you like the 05? We looked at them in 04 but my wife didn't care for the lack of view out of the rear and rear corner glass. The 2010's are worst yet! Nice vehicles to drive though!

I like it very much, has a whole lot more bell`s/whistles than the 01.Feels like a sportier suspension,so it handles much better. Of course that could also be the bigger 18" wheels.Cruises on the highway @ 80 and it doesnt even feel like your going that fast.(hope their are no PA state troopers on here

) so far I`m very pleased with the decsion we made. And very good in snow/bad weather. I was concerned about that because starting in 04 they did away with the viscious coupling in the AWD system. Now rely on sensors, different kind of set up.But works very well.
