About 2 years ago I swapped out the OEM 80W-90 from the rear end on my 2000 Ford Crown Vic and used 2+ qt of pennzoil 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic gear lube.

This weekend I decided to install a posi and get rid of the open differential. The Pennzoil lube was drained and left in a pan outside (20F) for 24 hours in a garage.

I poured it into a milk jug (the stuff flows like water) but was very thick like a gear oil's supposed to be.

It wasn't "milky" - just rather dark. After I dumped it into the milk jug, I decided to shake the jug around to see if it'd foam - nada. The stuff clings to the walls and slowly drains down but no foaming action.

I saw Pennzoil's Marine 75W-90 GL-5 (synthetic) lower unit lube at Wal-mart for about $6.50/qt, but I didn't want to take a chance on this stuff.

So what's the verdict on the Pennzoil syn lube?Is it good stuff...I hope so I just bought a crap load of 75W-90 syn for my front axles and the 75W-140 syn for the rear...they are both GL-5 rated...any good?

FWIW the Pennzoil stuff did NOT foam like the Valvoline SynPower.

I'm using Valvoline Synpower in my Vic now only for break-in lube, then I'll be switching to Redline.

The Pennzoil Gear Plus Super 75W90 is extremely good synthetic gear oil. It also already has the posi track additive already added to it.

The main difference between the Marine gear oil you saw at Wal-Mart is, it does not have the posi additive and it has more imulsifiers in it to help deal with any water contamination.

Johnny, I've been wanting to ask you on the front page is the additive story where lucas was installed into the penz full synth 140 gear oil. Before they put the lucas in, I noticed the air that was entrenched in the penz oil after running it,as it was so noticable you could see the color of the oil completely changed. any comments as to what the reason is? ...

Thanks Johnny...I just bought a case of the Pennzoil gear lube at a good price...so was just wondering how good it was.
