About 2 years ago I swapped out the OEM 80W-90 from the rear end on my 2000 Ford Crown Vic and used 2+ qt of pennzoil 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic gear lube.
This weekend I decided to install a posi and get rid of the open differential. The Pennzoil lube was drained and left in a pan outside (20F) for 24 hours in a garage.
I poured it into a milk jug (the stuff flows like water) but was very thick like a gear oil's supposed to be.
It wasn't "milky" - just rather dark. After I dumped it into the milk jug, I decided to shake the jug around to see if it'd foam - nada. The stuff clings to the walls and slowly drains down but no foaming action.
I saw Pennzoil's Marine 75W-90 GL-5 (synthetic) lower unit lube at Wal-mart for about $6.50/qt, but I didn't want to take a chance on this stuff.
