Sound advice...

+2 Heartily agreed.

If you want a litle more protection, ignore the nonsense and find a 5w or conventional 10w30 you like. The new Pennzoil is a good choice.

It's like theres no middle ground here, either 5w20 or 15wOneMillion...

I'd second sticking with 5w20 or 10w30 synthetic at the most. Redline is probably overkill for this engine. Take the power and torque and divide it by 8, and you'll realise the engine isn't very stressed at all.

Who in Detroit told you this? The Engineer they Fired?

Still, depending on who told this to you, do or do not do as they say.

If it was someoen that sounded liek they knew what they were talking about, or if they said they were talking from experience, take this into account.

Still, 5W-50 from 5W-20 is a BIG Switch. I like his thinking, but im not sure, because the motor didnt even have anything close to that in it.

Roush does that. Nice cushion i suppose the Roush Mustang people like. They loove 5W-50.

And thats not a bad thing.

You are hurting power, gas economy, and more than likely running higher oil temps with that thick oil.
There is not much made that is thicker for street cars.
5-20 is not a death sentence - they are very tough, and very tested.
At least split the difference.

Shearing can also happen when oil is too thick for the application. Think of forcing a golfball through an opening made for a marble. One of the oil company techs used that example to describe using an oil that is too thick for the application.

Well than why is 30 and 40 weight speced in the rest of the world?

You will find 10w30 runs smoother, a good choice in summer.

Motorcraft 5W20.

I used to use whatever weight in my 3.0 V6. 5W20, 5W30, 10W30, if it was somewhat close, I didn't care. The splash lube'd cam synchro chewed itself up at 60K miles. I don't know that the different oil weights caused it, but it's a possibility, so I'm sticking with 5W20 from now on. Now with 99K miles on it, it's running flawlessly with 5W20 Full Synthetic Motorcraft or Kendall (whatever I can get easily). I'd stick with the factory weight. Ford recommends a higher weight when it is needed (4.0s still use 5W30). If Ford says it can take 5W20, it can take 5W20. Some may disagree, I'm just going with my experience, and Atlanta isn't THAT hot anyway.

MC 5w-20 is probably all you need. Ford did extensive testing with it.

Otherwise, Pennzoil Ultra or Mobil 1.

I'd consider a 30 grade if I had problems, but I wouldn't jump up to a 50 grade oil in something calling for 5W20. I respect FMC and think they know what oil is best for their applications.

I believe in other parts of the world 20 grade oil is very hard to come by, so other oils are used instead. I'd guess in a few more years they'll be specing 5W20 as well.

It's just that 30 won't hurt anything, esp in summer. Starting with a 30 weight at +60f is like starting with a 20 weight at +50f

^^^ That doesn't mean I'm against 20 weight at all, but I am running 30 in my 20 spec truck in the summer now with no issues.

It is not a huge difference.

Roush mustangs spec 5W-50 and thats a big reason i feel it will serve my beat-up modded Car well.

Saleen and Shelby may not but they go 40, dont they?

The 40 vs. 50 debate must have to do with Cushion and Oil Pressure It has to be. Porsche is more extreme than that, so is BMW.

Now if 50-weight Oils dont shear to 40 and 40-weight Oils dont shear to 30, that would be awesome.
