synthetic blend and dino

if i use, example;conventional oil 5w30 or synthetic blend 5w30,and change both oils after 3000miles,do i have any benefit using synthetic blend over conventional oil??i drive firebird v6 92 112500 miles on it.can conventional oil handle same job like synthetic blend oil would?i drive a lot in hot traffic,exessive idling, high speeds 140km/h,stuff like that.only thing that i can think of is that,that synthetic blend can clean engine better than conventional oil would.i just loosing my mind when i think this stuff

Welcome to the club tonttu. I think that you will fit in here just fine if you're already losing your mind over oil. You won't get a definitive answer here, you'll only educate yourself to make your own decision. Search, read, and have fun.

Sounds like you drive your car pretty hard. Are you willing to spend a little extra to go synthetic? You sound like a good candidate for synthetics.

My understanding in a synthetic blend is that less viscocity improvers are needed, resulting in cleaner oil with less deposits. The addition of the synthetic also aids in cold flow properties. I don't know if the blend will clean better, because it could very well have the same additive package, but using it should result in a cleaner engine.

Unless you need synthetic for heat or cold, I think synthetic blends are better bang-for-the-buck.

Yes, and some synthetic blends are less expensive than dino. Trop-Arctic is $1.48 at Walmart. Kendall semi-synthetic is $1.59 at Big Lots. Both are great oils.

He stays witha 3k OCI. With that, what do you guys think? Will dino do just as well for him within 3k as a blend? Any benefit gained with the blend. IN A 3K OCI???

As long as the 3k is not taking 2 years to happen

3k OCI = Dino... (unless your force fed IMO)

unless you are racing or driving commercially I see no need for a 3k oci, but a syn blend MAY be better if the oil has a premium additive package and/or better base oils.look for a dual rated oil sl/cf or sm/cf or exceeds the requirement for... otherwise imho the only difference you will notice is how much you have saved/spent.

shell helix plus is synthetic blend and it is api sl/cf only problem is that it is 10w40. i think 5w30 would be better.mt owners manual says that do not use 10w40 only 5w30 or 10w30.and some people say that 10w40 is not good,because it could damage my engine,some people says that it wont.i dont now what to do.use 10w40 or not?

I think it gets cold there does it not?

5w30 conventional every 3-4k will do you fine.

FWIW - I use to use regular Havoline conventional 10w30 at 3k OCI's, with having used about 1/8 - 1/4 qt in that time.

I have since switched to Havoline blend 5w30, truck has not dropped below the full mark in 2500 miles now - and the oil's still REALLY clean and clear, gonna take it to a 4k OCI now.

I have 150k miles and no issues with switching to the Blend versus regular oil.

If your owners manual does not spec a 10w-40, I would not use it, especially in the winter.

If you want a "close to" 40wt, there are some high mileage oil formulations, i.e. Havoline HM 10w30; Maxlife HM 10w30; and Castrol High Mileage 10w30 that are all close to a 40wt when hot. And from the conscensus on this board, they are all good oils.

With 3,000 mile intervals use the 5w30 conventional.
The blend is a waste of money - it won't perform any better, last any longer, or keep your engine any cleaner.

temperatures here could go sometimes at 0f.(-18c.)but i usually drive summer and spring times,temperatures like,+40f to+80f.(+4c.-+27c.)so i think 10w40 would be ok.it just that my manual says,do not use 10w40.but mobil synthetic blend in sweden is 10w40.i think mobil sellers here could order me 5w30 or 10w30 mobil blend oil.but my engine has a 112500 miles on it.maybe 10w40 could protect it little better?

It gets up to 110 here in Utah and I've been driving across 120 degree heat going to Las Vegas and I run 5w30 and 10w30 with no problems.

This is in many types of outfits and all are running great and used oil analysis are fine.

I have not seen very many outfits that NEED 10-40 oil...

PS: An engine with 112k miles is nothing... Just normal 5w30 conventional or 10w30 will do you fine. No HM or anything for 3k OCIs..
