I have a 2003 corvette with AT. Any advantage in replacing the transmission fluid with synthetic? I have 7000 miles on the car and have Amsoil ATF available.

If your trans uses DexronVI you may wish to continue using the Dexron VI until a synthetic comes out that exceeds the GM specs for that fluid.

I thought that Dexron VI specs a maximum viscosity of 6.4 cSt while Amsoil ATF lists a viscosity of 6.8 cSt. I am not saying that 6.4 and 6.8 are significantly different, but how can ATF meet Dexron VI specs? Am I wrong about the Dexron VI viscosity limit?

GMorg - I don't know actually - I didn't know the max vis. for Dex VI is 6.4 cSt. Interesting. I know Amsoil was reformulated for Dex VI, though. GREAT question. (And I thought 6.8 was thin!)

So, should I use the Amsoil or an alternative? I assume if Amsoil viscosity is a 6.8 than my warranty would be void or could damage occur to the trans?

depends on what your long term plan is

I have a 67 Camaro with 34,000 miles which has the original Dexron II fluid and runs quite well on it's occasional summer trips to Dairy Queen........

OTOH if you plan on some drag racing, I'd fill it up with Allison (Castrol) Transynd

This vette will be kept as long as I live and then passed down to my daughter. I want the best protection and best ATF available!

I don't know of anything that has been proven to provide longer transmission life than Amsoil ATF for GM/DexIII(H) applications. Amsoil ATF does not appear to be a bad choice.

The following is the earliest BITOG reference that I can find for DexVI viscosity specs.

Impossible to have a one meets all until/unless Ford changes specs in the future "

By the way, I am finding it easier to find BITOG references through Google than through the site search engine. When searching via google, just make sure you include "theoildrop" as a search term.

You are not wrong about the limits 6.8 is not 6.4. DEX VI is 6.0 well below the maximum limit. You may not have any problems with Amsoil but they won't replace your transmission if you do.

neither will GM on a 4-year old car or did an '03 vette come with a 5-year powertrain warranty?

I have an extended warranty in effect for another year and a half through Warranty Direct.

I got a 1992 Chevy Silverado SB 4x4 pickup that I use to plow snow with (we get 200 inches+). Has had Amsoil ATF for most of all of its life, 93,000 miles and the trans is like new. I had the trans shop drop the pan and replace the filter a while back just for preventive maint. and there was not a speck of crude or anything in the bottom of the pan. The trans tech showed me the pan and made the comment, the trans looks brand new. Said he had seen many a truck that have been plowing snow with less miles than mine and the trans failed. Put in a new Wix fitler and topped of with more synthetic and expect to get another 10 yrs of use from the truck.

btw-Have the same ATF in my 2004 GMC SLT E. Cab Z71 PU since less than 10,000 miles, now over 30g miles. The 1st vehicle I ever used the Ams ATF was a 1979 Custom Chevy Van and every vehicle has got it since.
