ok, I put mobil1 atf in my transmission today. all I can say is WOW! hehe. I'm not sure if it was shifting poorly because the fluid in there was 160k miles old(changed at 6k per manual and never again before now). The gears shift effortlessly and with no resistance. The stuff in there looked clear and red but that doesn't mean anything. I highly recommend synthetic ATF in the transmissions now.

It shifts so smoothly now that I got on the highway and went to shift it into 5th and I had to look to make sure it was there because it took so little effort to move it there!

I was gonna put amsoil universal atf in but the auto parts store wants $7.99 for it. I got the M1 ATF for $3.99/qt at murrays.

i would really love to try synthetic in my transmission, the shifts arent hard, but they are a little harsh. i want to try amsoils because of their long lasting imo. but gee here its 9 bucks a quart. and i need 7 quarts! hehe. if i have extra money ill do it.

but maybe ill hit up mobil 1. has a reasonable price too.

I also noticed a big improvement in shift quality after putting the Mobil ATF in my Cherokee auto.We did a poll on a Jeep board a while back about this subject and it turned out to be a 50/50 split on using a syn lube in the AW-4 transmission. Some owners saying that a syn lube would ruin this transmission...there was NO hard facts to back this claim...just observations on the most part.I will continue to drain and fill using the Mobil ATF due to improved shift qualities...especially in cold weather after this winter...plus it's nice that the Jeep auto comes with a drain plug

I'm now starting to notice the shifting is a little stiff until the engine warms up. any idea what would be causing this or what I can to do curb it?

i have that problem, my fluid isnt warm enough so it doesnt shift well. i hate it =). u can go with another weight slightly lower but really i think its normal.
