The e34 board on bimmerfest.com is not quite as bad.

I recall reading somewhere, that the 'WAX' myth was a smear campaign by fans of Texas Crude, and due to the use of Pennsylvania crude, which was largely taped out. Most motor oils now used Texas Intermediate as base stocks. That's IF my memory is correct.
Penn oil is paraffinic based and used for actual wax production.

Edited to add: Pennzoil and Quaker State (and others) originally used and advertised Pennsylvania crude-they don't currently.
