Syntec blend in Honda CRV...

My mother has a 2001 CRV. She only puts about 5000 to 6000 miles a year on the car. Almost all trips are short trips around town. Maybe 2 times a month it gets driven 40 miles or more by my sister or me. I am changing the oil tomorrow with syntec blend 5w30 and a supertech filter. I'm thinking once a year changes at 6000 miles is safe. GTX would probably be fine but for 6 bucks more a year I can run the blend. I thought it was probably a good idea. What do yall think?

In our 2001 CR-V that gets about 10K miles a year I change the oil every 4 months, used to use Syntec Blend, but now went to Durablend. I can get a Durablend OC for 20 dollars at the Honda Dealer.

Yeah! Durablend is fine for your CR-V. Twenty bucks at the dealer sounds like a great deal. Almost sounds too cheap!

It's an either/or. Given the 6k miles/year, I'd say there are 3 levels of service, depending on how much you love the car and how severe the driving condition is. From best service to easiest:

-2x dino
-1x synth
-1x blend

fwiw, if doing 1x year, do it right before "winter".

Just my opinion, but I would do either a yearly change with full synthetic or twice yearly with dino as well. I don't believe the extra money for the blend is worth it.

Yeah the cost is 3 dollars a quart and they dont charge labour.

The CR-V only holds about 4 quarts of oil. Why not spend a few extra dollars on a full synthetic? For about $25 you can use a K&N filter and 4 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum. I know that Pennzoil Platinum is made from a Group III base, but it will be much better than a synthetic blend and will allow a once per year OCI. The K&N filter is also one that I have read Terry Dyson brag about here on BITOG.

I like gtx. I just don't know how well it would hold up for a year. The mileage doesn't scare me at all. I just thought the blend may hold up a bit better due to the time of the interval. In North Texas our winters are so mild it's not an issue when I change. It's done as of this morning so we will see in a year. I'll probably go to pp next year.

I'd probably use a full synthetic if I were changing only once a year, though I don't necessarily foresee any problems with your plan.

been changing the oil on my crv once a year with diesel oil. change the filter every 2 years.

thats about 8-12 a year.
under the oil filler cap, the head, cams, etc look CLEAN.

You could but it'd be overkill for this engine. I know overkill is our minimum standard here, but on a V? You could get 500k off this car on Canola oil.

I think our 04 Honda Element has the same 2.4 L vtec engine.

Mobil 1 0W-20, 5W-20, or Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 changed every 7000 miles has worked well for the 70,000 miles since new.

Why not try a full synthetic and change once a year or every 7000 miles.

Our engine has had very low oil consumption with the oils listed above...never a bad thing if you're not there checking the oil.

I think that vehicle has the 2.0, as our 1998 does. I just changed Clean 7500 after 6k/4months and it was dirty. I feel like I got money's worth out of the oil and am comfortable the service was adequate with this synthetic-blend oil. 6k over the course a full year would be pushing it. Better to do the 2x dino service or the 1x a year synthetic changes. Doing changes with blend 2x a year might be good, but not cost/effective. Every situation is a lil different.

Full synthetic would have been the way to go maybe. I think I'll be fine with the blend though. It will be interesting to see what uoa looks like in a year,
