I've got a 323GTX and live in socal so I feel you HLA pains.
I used Mobil 1 10W30 thinking it was thicker than the 5W30 and my HLA's would occasionally collapse.
The turbo shaft eventually snapped and fubar'ed the engine. I miss Mobil 1 redcap 15W50...
I'd think about giving GC a try if you can find it. It's almost a 40wt and shouldn't shear downlike Mobil 1 does. I think it'd be thick enough to get you thru till the (late?) spring.
Synpower (or Castrol) 5W40 should work nicely, maybe Castrol 5W50 in the summer?
There's Rotella syn 5W40 from Walmart. I've used the 15W40 and imho it's noisier than other 15W40's. My 323 buddy says the same of the syn so it might not work too well either.

The A3/B4 rating is nice....
Where do they sell Maxlife syn? I think I may have only seem the dino version.
What's the viscosity of the xW30's? I couldn't find the Maxlife syn pdf. http://www.valvoline.com/products/Maxlife.pdf
I'd also doubt that 505.01 rating as that's for the VW TDI PD "cam eater" engines that need a xW40 oil, right?
